In 2019 the City of New Haven closed out the year with twelve (12) homicides and seventy eight (78) shooting assaults. Of those shooting assaults five (5) were of victims under the age of eighteen, with two of those victims having been eight and nine years of age. Yes, the city saw an uptick in violent crime that we all need to be a part in addressing. This clearly shows that all of us, not just law enforcement, politicians, and those that serve second chance populations need to strive harder to decrease these numbers. To implement a decrease means that all of us, citizens, activists, service providers, and everyday folk need to work harder collectively to bring about this change. Let's put aside egos, personalities, and differences to make our streets safer for the young, the old, and those in jeopardy of being victims and perpetrators of gun violence. 11020660468?profile=originalStatement on the Puerto Rico State of Emergency

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Puerto Rico was recently hit by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake, displacing thousands of residents; subsequently, many are without power and access to water. In the wake of the state of emergency in Puerto Rico, Mayor Justin M. Elicker and New Haven Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Ilene Tracey, released the following joint statement:

“The City of New Haven and New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) are prepared to receive residents and students from Puerto Rico in the wake of this most recent disaster–including those unaccompanied by a parent or guardian–and provide them with supplies, clothing, and transportation. Students will be assessed for bilingual education and special needs and will be placed in the appropriate classrooms. Resources to support all students and families received during this disaster will be covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The NHPS Youth, Family, and Community Engagement Department will be coordinating communications and will be a resource to students and families if they arrive in the school system.

We stand with Puerto Rico, and our hearts go out to all those affected by this disaster. The Elm City is ready to accommodate those seeking refuge in this perilous time.”

NHPS is offering services to existing students and incoming students affected by the earthquakes and can be coordinated through Daniel Diaz by calling (475) 220-1063.

11020666054?profile=originalTiny House Fan/Opponent! Happy New Year :)

First, thank you for submitting a survey response, coming to a community meeting, and/or signing up to receive our emails. You care! No matter if you strongly support or vehemently oppose the tinylifenhv initiative, I personally just want to say thanks for participating in your community. Civics are important, and you matter!
Update: After a rocky December, we will be submitting draft zoning text to the Board of Alders on January 23 for consideration and public hearing at the February 19th City Plan Commission meeting.
Draft Zoning Text: We took a stab at incorporating the community's ideas and feedback into a coherent zoning text and came up with this draft. Essentially, it's a floating zone that can be applied in residential areas, subject to compliance with this zone's requirements and restrictions. For example, in order to develop certain projects using this zone (rather than normal RM-2 or RS-1 zones), you have to prove that you personally (not your LLC) live in New Haven. Read the draft, feel free to redline it, or email us back with comments.
Next Steps: As we prepare to submit to the Board of Alders, we need your help with the following:
-- Remember to answer our survey if you haven't already. Send it along to friends or neighbors for them to answer as well. Try to get responses in by Jan 15.
-- Consider submitting public testimony online here
-- Mark your calendars and come to the public hearing on February 19 at 6:00PM at 200 Orange Street.

-- AND Please please continue to advocate for more diverse and more affordable housing types in more neighborhoods in New Haven!

Thank you for helping to improve housing options in New Haven.

Warm Regards,

Katherine McComic, tinylifenhv.com

Mayor Elicker Transition Team Releases Transition Report

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Today, Mayor Justin Elicker and the twenty-five-member Transition Team held a press conference to announce their transition report. The transition report will detail the transition team’s recommendations to Mayor Elicker of what his administration’s goals should be for his first one-hundred days in office, as well as goals in his first term in office. This report is a culmination of work over the past two months; the Elicker Transition Team gathered public input across New Haven using surveys and hosting two public meetings at High School in the Community ahead of finalizing the report.

The Elicker Transition Team was co-chaired by State Rep. Robyn Porter, Sarah Miller, and Kica Matos who worked with two facilitators: Elizabeth Nearing and Kia Levey. The co-chairs released the following statement: “This report is a labor of love, and we are not only proud of the content, but also the process that we adopted. Working with a diverse, smart and dedicated transition team, we have produced a document that presents an exciting vision for the city that we all call home. The recommendations are reflective of the views of a wide cross section of city residents, hundreds of whom came together in the spirit of community to share their ideas, hopes and dreams for New Haven. We look forward to seeing the Mayor and his team bring these recommendations to life.”

“This report is a result of hundreds of hours of hard work from our Transition Team, who all volunteered this time because we all have a shared vision of New Haven where everyone can thrive. I want to thank our hardworking co-chairs, facilitators and all staff that made this possible.
