Professionally, Dr. Negrón brings 28 years of public education experience to the superintendent position. She has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and senior-level administrator. Her work has spanned early childhood, elementary, secondary, and university-level experience. She has worked both in New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) and in other school districts. She and her husband are also the proud parents of an NHPS graduate who now attends Southern Connecticut State University.

Most recently, Dr. Negrón has been serving as the acting deputy superintendent of academics and school leadership for the Hartford Public Schools, and previously served as Hartford’s chief of academics, teaching, learning and student supports. While in New Haven, Dr. Negrón served as a teacher and principal at Hill Regional Career Magnet High School as well as director of instruction and director of early childhood.

I believe this diversity of roles and experiences will enable Dr. Negrón to identify and leverage New Haven’s strengths while also incorporating best practices from other school districts that will strengthen our schools in the Elm City.

While Dr. Negrón's professional qualifications are truly impressive, I believe her personal lived experience truly sets her apart as an inspirational leader for our students and school communities.

Growing up in a poor and working-class family, her parents only received a 6^th and 7^th grade education, and they worked hard and long hours to make ends meet and to provide a better future for their children. At the age of ten, her family moved from Puerto Rico to Connecticut and she enrolled in school speaking only Spanish and encountered the challenges that many our English Language Learners experience. Overcoming the many obstacles in her path, Dr. Negrón went on to become a first-generation college graduate, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Spanish from Central Connecticut State University, and then earning a Master of Arts degree in education and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Connecticut.

In Dr. Negrón’s own words, it’s that experience that informs her work in education and drives her commitment to equity and excellence for all students. On Thursday, when we visited schools the day after her appointment as superintendent-elect, time and time again, I saw Dr. Negrón’s passion and experience shine through in all her interactions with students, parents, and educators.

As a multilingual learner, bilingual education teacher, and expert in bilingual bicultural education – and, as a child who knew poverty, struggle, and challenge – Dr. Negrón’s is able to connect with students and families whose own stories and struggles share a semblance of her own. Further, she is keenly aware of the importance of educating and attending to the needs of the whole child, both in and out of the classroom.

In New Haven, there’s no shortage of spirted debate and we don’t always agree. But the unanimous vote from the Board of Education in support of Dr. Negrón’s appointment, coupled with the enthusiastic statements of support by the head of the teachers, administrators, and paraprofessionals unions, show that we are all excited about Dr. Negrón and rooting for her and our collective success.

To be clear, with 19,000 students across 41 different schools, there is much work to do and many challenges ahead. He began rapping and singing at age 13 and has not stopped. After getting deep into the newest music industry tools he learned to produce beats in high school. Balo also then began releasing music and music videos and performing around the Boston area opening for fellow artists including Mac Miller and D12. He wanted to take it to the next level and moved straight to LA after high school to learn music production and audio engineering professionally. After graduating from MI school of contemporary music, he's worked in studios all around Los Angeles producing and engineering for top acts and labels such as G.O.O.D Music, Cash Money Records, Sony and more.

Now, after cultivating an effective and talented team around him, Balo has been dropping music, including his debut single “Around You”, followed up by "1996", "Ride", "Off The Fence" and more. He's continuing to drop songs from his anticipated EP, Sunset Rush.

NEW HAVEN Conn. – Today, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker announced his pick for the head of the Arts and Cultural Affairs Department for the City of New Haven: arts administrator and cultural equity leader, Adriane Jefferson.

Adriane Jefferson is an executive in arts administration and cultural equity with expertise in program design, event and media production, grantmaking, external affairs, community partnerships, and new program initiatives. She specializes in professional development programming for young creative professionals, people of color, and social change. Adriane is a thought leader, adviser, and educator about issues of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion. She has dedicated her career to creating programs that result in a more equitable, vibrant and sustainable arts landscape.

Ms. Jefferson released the following statement:

"I believe that to have a thriving landscape of arts and culture, it must be approached through a lens of cultural equity. The arts, when utilized to its fullest potential, is a tool that has the power to break down socioeconomic barriers, fight systemic oppression, and provide opportunities in education and employment. Adriane Jefferson is an Arts Administrator and cultural equity leader who has worked professionally in the Arts & Culture sector for over 16 years. For the past three years she has served as an Arts Program Manager for the State of CT, Department of Economic and Community Development/Office of the Arts where she has developed groundbreaking programs for the State of CT such as The Arts Workforce Initiative paid Employment Program which has placed over 100 young people between the ages of 18-40 in arts jobs across the State.

Adriane is the creator and innovator of signature state programs such as The READI Music Conference and The READI Talk professional development Series, which has provided access and opportunity to hundreds of young creative professionals across the State who are seeking careers in arts and entertainment. In addition, Adriane has served as the CT State Coordinator for the National Endowment for the Arts Poetry Out Loud program, Make Music Day CT, and The Regional Initiative Grant program. She manages a combined program budget of slightly over $450,000 to foster, support, and provide opportunities to the creative community through funding and professional development initiatives.

Adriane has expertise in program design, event & media production, grantmaking, development, external affairs, community partnerships, and strategic planning, which includes the development and implementation of new program initiatives. She particularly specializes in the areas of developing programs for creative entrepreneurs, programs that support people from historically marginalized groups, social change initiatives, and building cross-sector relationships between the arts and other business industries. Prior to her current position at the State, Adriane served as the Executive Director and Senior Director of programs for the Writers Block Ink in New London, CT. She also has served as a member of their Board of directors.

Adriane's professional career began in 2004, where she worked behind the scenes in local television & production and special event planning in the city of Miami, Florida. Simultaneously she was also pursuing her B.A in Popular Music from Florida Memorial University in Opa Locka, Florida. She graduated Cum Laude in 2009. Developing much of her professional career in Miami, Florida from 2004- 2015, Adriane has worked in arts education as an educator in both music and theater arts. Between 2008 and 2010, she helped to develop the drama program for Alonzo Mourning Charities' Over Town Youth center and The Gibson Charter School. Adriane Jefferson is known as a thought leader, adviser, and educator about issues of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Cultural Equity. Young Gifted have been around for quite long and have produced dozens of hit songs in their more than 25 years appearance on the hip hop music scene. Yet, all their beats and sounds seem to have been launched just yesterday. Young Gifted are always ready to test the limits of the hip-hop genre in the most creative ways.
In their new single titled “STILL” the group explores into the mindset of the streets and the cipher language of the hood through its code phrase “play to keep.”
This legendary group originates from New Brunswick, New Jersey. Even though they carry in their blood the sounds and images of their born place and the experiences of the challenging life there, their songs speak to a much wider audience mostly on the east coast, but also elsewhere, in US and abroad. “STILL” is not to be an exception.

UNDEFEATED SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT Angel Camacho Jr., right, begins his second comeback Friday, Nov. 7th, 2014 at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I., when he faces Tylon Burris of Hartford, Conn., in a six-round bout. Camacho spent three years away from boxing between 2008 and 2011 and then briefly retired in 2012 before deciding to mount another comeback at the age of 31. The Providence, R.I., native is 12-0 with four knockouts.

Following three-year layoff, Camacho Jr. returns to boxing with a new lease on life

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 23rd, 2014) -- Two years ago, with pressure to raise a family and provide his children with a stable home, Angel Camacho Jr. decided to step away from boxing, still undefeated after 12 professional fights.

"I could accept the fact I was no longer fighting," said the father of three from Providence, R.I., "but it was difficult to swallow."

Rather than live with regret, the 31-year-old super middleweight decided it'd be best to end his career on his terms. On Friday, Nov. 7^th, 2014, Camacho (12-0, 4 KOs) will end a three-year layoff when he returns to the ring to face hard-hitting Tylon Burris (5-2, 3 KOs) of Hartford, Conn., in a six-round bout on the undercard of "Winner Take All," the 2014 season finale for CES Boxing at Twin River Casino.

"Every night, I would lay my head down and watch a fight and wonder, 'What if? ... What could've happened?' I didn't want to live like that."

Now he won't have to. Win or lose, Camacho Jr. will get to write his own ending to what has been a tumultuous career both in and out of the ring.

Six years ago, at the height of his career, a 25-year-old prospect with a perfect 11-0 record, Camacho was forced to put boxing on hold when he was sentenced to 18 months in prison stemming from a felony domestic assault charge. Though he only served nine months, the case took two years to process, so Camacho wasn't sentenced until January of 2011.

"I had to plead to something I really didn't do because I didn't have a lawyer," he said. "It really makes you think about what's important and what's not important."

Camacho Jr. returned to the ring later that year in December, ending a three-year hiatus with a win over Keith Kozlin. His comeback was in full swing. He even went as far as to re-sign with his original promoter, Jimmy Burchfield Sr., but conflicts within his camp, coupled with family obligations, forced him to step away from the game, this time by choice.

"It's just life's events. Life's hurdles. Life's complications," Camacho Jr. said. "I had a divorce, a lot of mishaps. Then I was dealing with my significant other wanting me to stop, wanting me to spend more time at home.

"I thought I was done," he continued. "My wife was happy. I was spending time with my family. Everything was good. Then her cousin asked me to train him. As I was helping him get in shape, I was getting in boxing shape.

"That itch came back again."

With a new management team and a new trainer in Rhode Island-based Roland Estrada, Camacho Jr. immediately sought out Burchfield to resume his career. Burchfield welcomed him back with open arms, reuniting the team that helped bring Camacho to 11-0 before his first hiatus.

"I should've never left. I should've followed my passion. This is my first love," Camacho Jr. said. "God gave me the talent to do this, so why not exploit that talent?

"I wasn't meant to get to 12-0 and just stop fighting. There's much more for me to do in boxing. I can help people. I can deliver a message, help guide people. I want to use boxing as a platform to reach out to kids in need.

"I've gone through a lot, having drug issues, self-medicating because of depression, to now being 100-percent focused and clean. I'm really focused on where I need to go in life."

Stepping back into the game has been a breeze, mostly because of Estrada's tutelage -- "I'm doing things with [Estrada] that I've never done in boxing before," he said -- but also because he's stayed in shape through the years due to the grueling, physical labor of his 9-to-5 job.

"I'm a chimney man," he said. "I mix cement all day, carry around bricks, climb up and down ladders, clean chimneys, build chimneys, install wood stoves and liners for furnaces.

"It's hard, physical labor. It's a tough job. My body's always aching. It's very similar to boxing."

Aside from the physical attributes, the mental aspect of boxing, arguably the most important part, has always been the foundation to Camacho's success. He's a student of the game, the kind of fighter who watches the sport night and day even if he's not preparing for a fight.

"I truly, genuinely love the sport," he said. "It's like playing chess. I've been sparring with [junior middleweight world champion] Demetrius [Andrade]. He's a technician. When I'm in there with him, I'm like, 'I'm going to do this, this and this.' It's really like playing a game of chess.

"If I move my rook to this spot, his knight will be there. You have to be three steps ahead. That's what I love about boxing. It's a thinking man's sport."

The fight against Burris is no easy task. Burris has a reputation for being one of the region's hardest punchers, known primarily for knocking out Connecticut's Kevin Cobbs in 2012, to this day the only loss on Cobbs' record. But this is a new and improved Camacho, one with less turmoil in his personal life, a father dedicated to raising his three children, Taytum (10), Cayden (6) and Aniya (10 months), while resuming a once-promising career derailed one too many times in the past.

Win or lose, Camacho Jr. will at least be able to walk away with no regrets, whenever that time comes.

CHARLOTTE — Commissioner Jacqie Carpenter said she hopes to have a decision on the future site of the CIAA basketball tournaments by late March.

The weeklong men's and women's basketball tournaments is being played this week in Charlotte, where it has been held since 2006.

However, the contract between the 12-team conference and the city of Charlotte expires after this year's tournaments.

Carpenter said the conference will be gathering bids from cities that have expressed interest in hosting the tournaments beginning in 2015 in the coming weeks.

Among the cities interested in hosting the tournament aree Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Hampton, Va. and Washington, D.C.

"We are focused on having the best tournament we can then after that, review the bids from the cities and work with our board and hopefully have a decision by late March," Carpenter said. "(The timetable) will depend on how many bids we receive."

The Division II CIAA combined tournaments, the third-largest NCAA basketball tournaments in the country in terms of attendance and economic impact, moved from Raleigh to Charlotte in 2006.

Charlotte City officials have twice since renewed with the CIAA on separate three-year contracts.

Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority executive director Mike Butts said the city plans to make an aggressive bid to keep the tournament.

"Our interest is very high," Butts said. "We have been very pleased to have the privilege of hosting the event. Charlotte is a walkable city with hotels, restaurants and entertainment nearby. And it's a safe environment."

Carpenter said Charlotte has been a "great host" over the past nine years and is hoping they will submit a competitive bid.

"Our goal is to make sure whatever city we go to, whether it is Charlotte or another city, is that it's an open process and one that fits our bid specifications and that we have the best experience for our student-athletes and our fans and a plan that it financially makes sense for us to be in that location," Carpenter said.

The CIAA tournament has been a moneymaker for Charlotte.

The CRVA estimated that last year's tournaments generated a $47.17 million economic impact for the city and immediate surrounding area, including $29.86 million in direct spending. That was down slightly from the $50.5 million impact in 2012 when the conference celebrated its 100-year anniversary.

Carpenter, who took over as commissioner in August 2012, said the conference is recovering financially.

She said the CIAA spent five years in a deficit before pulling out last year, in large part due to cutting down costs on what she deemed unnecessary expenditures.

While the CIAA did not release how much money it generated from last year's tournament, Carpenter knows how important the basketball tournament is to the conference's future success.

The week has become much more than just a basketball tournament for fans, who regularly attend parties that include national celebrities during their stay in Charlotte.

"This is the one of the largest events in the country and we depend on this tournament being successful so that we can distribute a significant amount of scholarship dollars to our membership institutions," Carpenter said.
