City of New Haven cold weather protocol

The National Weather Service is forecasting significant rain, high winds and freezing temperatures for our region. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected, and coastal flooding is likely is some of the city’s low-lying areas, which may cause road closures. Then, beginning Friday afternoon and through the weekend, overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the teens and, with the wind chill factor, into the single digits.  

The City has activated its severe cold weather protocols and I wanted to pass along a few quick safety tips for residents:  

1. Make sure to fully charge your cell phones and critical electronic and medical devices in preparation for a potential power outage; 

1. Drive with caution and, if possible, adjust your travel times, if you are traveling for the holidays. The rain followed by freezing temperatures may result in icy roads. 

1. Do not drive through flooded roadways – instead, turn around and choose a different route.  

1. Check in on your family, friends and neighbors. 

1. Call 9-1-1 for any storm-related emergencies. 

Our walk-in winter Warming Centers will be open 24 hours a day beginning Friday 6pm. The list of warming centers can be found on the city's website: newhavenct.gov or by calling 211. 

Most importantly, for kids in New Haven expecting a visit by Santa, know that -- no matter what -- that no winter storm can stop Santa Claus. Santa is still on his way and Santa is still coming to town. Happy Holidays!

Today the city of New Haven began the process of distributing at-home rapid tests to essential staff with symptoms or COVID exposures – including teachers and other school staff ahead of tomorrow’s return to the classroom. This will help ensure essential staff can safely return to work. This initial distribution is part of 10,000 tests the city obtained in recent days.

The city has also received 9,000 tests from the State of Connecticut. Distribution of those tests will begin tomorrow. This initial tranche of tests will be distributed to non-profit service providers who work with vulnerable communities – such as the elderly and those experiencing homelessness. A large portion of these tests will also be dedicated to New Haven Public School children with symptoms or COVID exposures. NHPS will share information directly with families in the near future on this.

While we do not yet have enough rapid tests to distribute widely to the public, we expect to receive additional tests from the state, at which time we will announce additional distributions.

If you need to get tested, Wren labs is re-opening their testing site on the New Haven Green tomorrow afternoon (3-6 PM) and will continue to operate the 60 Sargent Drive location each morning (8 AM – Noon) except for Fridays. No appointments are required, and there may be wait time.

Attorney General Tong Praises Nomination of Vanessa Avery for United States Attorney

(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong praised the nomination today of Vanessa Avery to serve as United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Vanessa Avery currently serves as the Associate Attorney General for Enforcement, Litigation and Investigations in the Connecticut Office of the Attorney General. The nomination is subject to confirmation by the United States Senate.

“Vanessa Avery is exceptionally qualified, incredibly hardworking, and an excellent choice to serve as United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut. She is universally respected by every colleague she has worked with and has deep connections across the Connecticut legal community. In our work together, Vanessa always leads with integrity and a strong commitment to justice, and she insists on accountability and respect for the rule of law. I will miss her leadership and guidance here in the Office of the Attorney General, but am so proud of this achievement and look forward to working closely with her in this new well-deserved role should she be confirmed,” said Attorney General Tong.

Prior to joining the Connecticut Attorney General’s Office, Vanessa was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Civil Division of the United States Attorney's Office, District of Connecticut. She previously served as a Trial Attorney for the Department of Justice Civil Division in Washington, D.C. Vanessa also spent more than a decade in private law firm practice representing corporate and individual clients in business and financial litigation, at the trial and appellate court levels. Vanessa earned her law degree at the Georgetown University Law Center, after completing her undergraduate studies at Yale University. She grew up in New Haven and is a proud graduate of the New Haven Public Schools.
