New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp and Chief of Police Anthony Campbell today reported the overnight death of 14-year-old shooting victim Tyriek Keyes, a city resident.

On July 16, at approximately 9:30 p.m. New Haven police officers responded to the report of a person shot in the area of Bassett and Newhall Streets. Upon arrival, they located the victim, Tyriek Keyes 14 YOA of New Haven, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital and listed in critical condition. Early this morning Keyes died from injuries sustained from the shooting.

“Tragically, gun violence has claimed the life of another city resident; this time the sadness we all feel is compounded by the youthful age of the victim,” Mayor Harp said. “On behalf of all city residents I mourn with his family, I praise the first responders and hospital staff who tried to save his life, I condemn the casual use and glut of these guns, and I appreciate the ongoing efforts of the police department in its continuing investigation.”

“This young student had just completed 8^th grade at Fair Haven – the entire school community is heartbroken by these tragic circumstances,” New Haven Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Reginald Mayo said. “School and district staff have been in constant contact with the family since the shooting and the district’s Youth and Family Services Division, trauma team, and community partners remain available to support students and staff affected by the tragedy.”

CITY OFFICIALS OFFER ‘BEAT THE HEAT’ OPTIONS IN THE FACE OF HOT WEATHER FORECAST

New Haven – City officials with the Office of Emergency Management, Department of Parks, Recreation, and Trees, and New Haven Free Public Library today offered residents helpful suggestions and possible ‘beat the heat’ options in the face of forecast hot weather the rest of the week.

All residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting clothing, and remain out of the direct sun; elderly residents, children, pets, and those with respiratory ailments are said to be particularly susceptible to heat and humidity so they should pay special attention to these suggestions, emergency management officials said

The five branches of the city library system are open and available as cooling centers during regular hours of operation. In addition, the city’s parks ‘n’ rec department announced extended hours at its pools, splash pads, and Lighthouse Point Park because of the forecast heat index for the rest of the week.

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp will hold a ‘mayor’s night out’ tomorrow evening, Wednesday, July 19, at the Columbus School – 255 Blatchley Ave, New Haven – from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Mayor Harp will be available to meet with residents during these public ‘office hours’ – residents are invited to ask questions, make suggestions, and otherwise address matters pertaining to New Haven and its governance.

The timing of this session is particularly important as New Haven begins its fiscal year this month without the benefit of an approved state budget. Residents’ questions and comments will be addressed on a first come, first served basis. No advance reservations or appointments are required or necessary

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp, acting on behalf of the City of New Haven, will join nearly 150 other cities around the world tomorrow when she signs the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. Mayor Harp will be joined by Joy Johannes, the city’s Food System Policy Director, members of the city’s Food Policy Council, and other anti-hunger activists.

With tomorrow’s signing, New Haven residents will join some 470 million inhabitants of other member cities in a global effort to strengthen urban food systems.

Tomorrow’s signing ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Floor 2 of City Hall – 165 Church Street – in New Haven.

MAYOR HARP SIGNS ONTO LETTER SUPPORTING NET NEUTRALITY; OPPOSES REPEAL OF 2015 ORDER

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp today joined scores of other American mayors and chief elected officials and signed onto a letter addressed to Ajit Pai, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The letter details the mayors’ opposition to the proposed repeal of the President Obama-era Open Internet Order, which established ‘net neutrality’ rules in the United States.

The 2015 order provides a level playing field for all internet content regardless of individual internet providers, reinforcing the idea of free and open internet service for all users.  In May, under the Trump administration, the FCC voted to reconsider provisions of the 2015 order and contemplate full repeal.

“Net neutrality is a pocket book issue for American households,” the letter states. “When internet providers restrict access to certain types of content and services and charge residents for the luxury of accessing information and services online, we are all less free to participate in the modern economy.”

The letter cites five nondiscrimination principles memorialized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in 2014, ahead of the 2015 order:

• ·         A commitment to transparency
• ·         The free and unrestricted flow of information over the internet
• ·         No blocking of law-abiding websites
• ·         No unreasonable discrimination of lawful network traffic
• ·         No paid prioritization

“Additionally, technology startups depend on net neutrality to gain fair and competitive access to customers,” the letter goes on to say. “A repeal of net neutrality rules could see innovative solutions from these startups relegated to the background as entrenched internet providers steer consumers to established solutions that can afford to pay for privileged status.”

“Our cities depend on a thriving startup community to drive innovation and our continued economic growth.”

With her signature on the letter, Mayor Harp joined the mayors of New York, San Francisco, Boston, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Chicago, and other major urban centers, “to ensure the principles of openness, freedom, and innovation continue to drive the American economy into the twenty-first century.”

16 July, 2017 – SHOOTING INVESTIGATION – UPDATE (7-17-2017 |12:51 PM)



On Sunday evening at 9:30 PM, Officers and firefighter/ EMTs were dispatched to Bassett Street near Newhall Street regarding a reported person shot. The victim, a fourteen year old male from New Haven had been shot and was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital. As of noon today, the victim remains in critical condition.



According to Assistant Chief Achilles Generoso, at this preliminary point in the investigation, it appears the victim was the specific target of the shooter and that this was not a drive-by assault. Detectives are busy with this case. Evidence collected from the scene, including that which is ballistic, is being scrutinized by department forensic experts.

Witness reports suggest the shooter was a passenger in a white Cross-over type vehicle. Originally, the perp’s vehicle was thought to have been a Toyota sedan. The Cross-over vehicle driver is a black male. The shooter wore a white shirt, denim jean shorts, “Jordan” sneakers and a black face mask. (The shooter’s gender and race were not given).

New Haven – To accommodate plans for a special event, city officials announced today that a portion of Dixwell Avenue, between Henry Street and Munson Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic on Saturday, July 15, 2017, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. For the duration of the closure drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route along Orchard Street.

CITY HALL BRIEFLY EVACUATED THIS AFTERNOON AFTER BOMB THREAT RECEIVED BY TELEPHONE

New Haven – City workers were evacuated from City Hall late this afternoon after a bomb threat was received by telephone. Shortly after 4:30 p.m. the police and fire departments responded to what turned out to be a false alarm.

City workers filed from offices at 165 Church Street after the building’s fire alarm system was activated; Church Street was closed between Chapel Street and Elm Street.

Following protocol and with an abundance of caution, police dogs swept the building. No evidence of a bomb was detected. The building was reopened after about an hour and 15 minutes.
