JOEY GARDNER OF Woonsocket, R.I., will face hometown rival Reynaldo Rodriguez in a special six-round super middleweight special attraction Friday, March 15th, 2013 at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

Cerebral Gardner takes on hometown rival Rodriguez Friday in Ocean State showdown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 12th, 2013) -- They keep challenging him, and all he continues to do is win.

Since returning to professional boxing in 2010 following a seven-year layoff, super middleweight Joe Gardner (10-5-1, 1 KO) has made quite a living outsmarting and outboxing some of the region's top fighters, yet the Woonsocket, R.I., native continues to be one of the most sought-after targets by would-be opponents hoping to score a knockout against the seasoned veteran.

"They all try to knock me out, and it doesn't work," Gardner said, "but I'll take it if they want to keep coming at me."

Enter fellow Woonsocket native Reynaldo Rodriguez (6-5-1, 3 KOs), who has answered the challenge and will look to play the spoiler role against his former training partner Friday, March 15th, 2013 when he and Gardner square off in a special six-round super middleweight bout on the undercard of "Unfinished Business," presented by Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment & Sports at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I.

Gardner and Rodriguez have shared more than gym space; they've also faced some of the same opponents, most notably Warwick, R.I., nativeKeith Kozlin, who has a draw and a win against Rodriguez and a loss against Gardner. Likewise, Gardner has also faced New England foesVladine BiosseElvin Ayala and Brian Barbosa and recently handed Providence's Alex Amparo his first career loss in a unanimous-decision win in November.

Despite his relative familiarity with Rodriguez, Gardner is expecting the unexpected Friday night, especially now that Rodriguez no longer trains at the Woonsocket Boxing Club.

"The last few times I've seen him, he's always looked different," Gardner said of Rodriguez. "The first time he fought Keith [in the draw] he looked great, but then during the camp before the second fight he kept talking about how he was going to knock him out and how he felt stronger than ever, and he ended up fighting the wrong fight.

"I hope he brings that fight [Friday], but I doubt it."

The 35-year-old Rodriguez hasn't won since he knocked out Richard Starnino in 2011 and was thoroughly outclassed by Kozlin in July, losing every round on two of the three scorecards, but the familiarity between he and Gardner - in addition to their past relationship - makes this one of the most intriguing of the regional showdowns slated for Friday's undercard at Twin River.

"You've got to think in his mind he knows the fight he fought against Keith was totally wrong," Gardner said. "When he's in tip-top shape, he's a sturdy guy."

Regardless of what Rodriguez does, Gardner's game plan will be the same as always - box on the outside, pick his shots, and frustrate his opponent into making mistakes. It's a cerebral approach that has worked well for Gardner in recent years.

"I think more than the other guys do. That's been my biggest advantage in the last year or two," Gardner said. "They come out balls to the wall in every fight looking for that one knockout punch. That might work for world-class guys, but not for guys on my level. If I see you a few times, I can usually pick you apart. My game is boxing on the outside. I just hope I can work my pace over the course of six rounds."

Peter Manfredo Jr. (38-7, 20 KOs) will face Seattle, Wash., nativeWalter Wright (14-3, 7 KOs) in the 10-round super middleweight main event of "Unfinished Business."

Tickets for "Unfinished Business" are $40.00, $60.00, $100.00 and $150.00 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling CES at 401.724.2253/2254, online at www.shop.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Players Club booth at Twin River, or through any TicketMaster location. Doors open 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7.

Also on the undercard, Boston middleweight Julio Garcia (6-3, 3 KOs) - trained by former heavyweight world champion John Ruiz - will faceThomas Falowo (8-1, 6 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., in a six-round bout while light heavyweight Kevin Cobbs (6-1, 2 KOs) of Burlington, Vt., who is looking to bounce back from his first career loss in November, will face hard-htting Paul Gonsalves (4-2, 3 KOs) of Harwich, Mass., in a four-round bout.

Warwick, R.I., super middleweight Benny Costantino (7-2, 4 KOs) is also back in action and looking to bounce back from his loss in July as he faces Quincy, Mass., veteran Emmanuel Medina (2-3-1, 2 KOs), who appeared in a nationally-televised bout on ESPN2 in January. PROVIDENCE'S OWN PETER Manfredo Jr. (right) will return to action against Seattle, Wash., native Walter Wright on Friday, March 15th, 2013 at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

Thirteen years into boxing career, Manfredo Jr. now faces adversity in and out of ring

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 6th, 2013) -- Aside from being a little older, and perhaps a bit wiser, the Peter Manfredo Jr. you see today is much different than "The Pride Of Providence" who rose to fame nearly eight years ago as a fan-favorite on the hit, reality television series The Contender.

As he continues his comeback, which began in November with a victory at Twin River Casino, Manfredo Jr. (38-7, 20 KOs) finds himself balancing life both in and outside of the ring, first as a husband and father, and then as a professional boxer.

Nowadays, each morning begins at 4 as Manfredo Jr. commutes to Boston for his day job. Then it's back to Rhode Island to hit the gym in preparation for his Friday, March 15th, 2013 showdown against fellow Contender alum Walter Wright (14-3, 7 KOs) before finally heading home to Connecticut with his wife and three children.

The mileage adds up, but it's worth putting in the extra work moonlighting as a laborer and boxer as long as Manfredo Jr. can avoid the pitfalls that have plagued so many fighters in the aftermath of their professional careers.

"I would never put my kids in this game," said Manfredo Jr., whose 10-round bout against Wright will headline Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment & Sports' "Unfinished Business" boxing card next Friday at the Twin River Event Center.

"There are no happy endings, not even for some of the best fighters in the world. Joe Louis died broke. Sugar Ray Robinson died broke.Muhammad Ali is like a vegetable now. There are no pensions or retirement funds. Why do we keep fighting? We're living within our means when we're fighting. When you're not fighting, how do you make ends meets?

"At the end of the day, when you're 30-something years old and you've put your whole career into boxing and now you have to get up to go to work, it's tough to keep up. There aren't any happy endings in this business, but maybe someday when I'm retired I can be a spokesperson for kids."

Since he announced his comeback last year, Manfredo Jr. has made it clear he's fighting to provide for his family. Asked what he would consider a "happy ending," he said, "I've done everything I've wanted to do in boxing.

"I'm probably the one percent who's made it to where I've been. I've fought some of the best fighters in the world. I fought Joe Calzaghe in front of 30,000 in Wales. I fought Sakio Bika. I fought Jeff Lacy. I fought Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. I've fought on HBO, ESPN - all over the world. I won a [International Boxing Organization] world title. If it were to end today, it'd be perfect.

"Now, I'm just doing it for the extra money. It's a trade, like when guys fought during the Great Depression. God gave me this gift, and I'm going to use it. I'll do it until I can't do it anymore."

Balancing both careers hasn't been easy, but the fight in November against Rayco Saunders (a 10-round unanimous-decision win) allowed Manfredo Jr. to shake off the ring rust. Now it's business as usual as he prepares to face Wright, a Seattle, Wash., native and former quarterfinalist on Season 2 of The Contender, who will be fighting for the first time since 2010.

"I feel good," Manfredo Jr. said. "I've been in the gym a lot, whereas before when I was preparing for the last fight I hadn't been in the gym for a whole year.

"I definitely feel an improvement. Things are a lot better than last time. At the same time, I didn't get to go to camp [in California with trainerFreddie Roach] because I'm working full-time, but I still feel good as I'm moving along. Everything is coming back to me. I'm getting and now I have to work everyday at 4 a.m. and hit the gym after that, but I'm getting it done. I'm excited for this fight."

The undercard of "Unfinished Business" features an array of intriguing regional showdowns, starting with an intra-city battle between Joey Gardner (10-5-1, 1 KO) and Reynaldo Rodriguez (6-5-1, 3 KOs) of Woonsocket, R.I. The former training partners will go toe-to-toe in a six-round super middleweight special attraction.

Unbeaten, 19-year-old Polish welterweight Patryk Szymanski (5-0, 2 KOs), fighting out of North Bergen, N.J., will make a special appearance in a six-round bout against Antonio Chaves Fernandes (2-8-1) of Brockton, Mass. Jesse Barboza (5-1-1, 3 KOs), a Barnstable, Mass., heavyweight, will return to Twin River for the first time since 2010 when he faces Jeramiah Witherspoon (2-2-1, 1 KO) of Altoona, Pa., in a four-round bout, while female bantamweight Noemi Bosques (1-0), a St. Petersburg, Fla., native who now trains in Providence, will face Queens native Vanessa Greco (1-2-1) in a four-round bout. All bouts are subject to change.

Friends, Family, Fans:
I hope everyone is braving the final stage of winter!  Here at CES things are really heating up as we get ready for the big boxing card at Twin River Casino on March 15th when "The Pride of Providence" Peter Manfredo Jr. (38-7, 20 KO) takes on Walter Wright (14-3, 7 KO). Both fighters were contestants on the hit boxing reality show "The Contender" and this main event will live up to AND exceed expectations!  I hope to see all of you there!

Jimmy
Meet the Opponent

Walter Wright (14-3, 7 KOs), a Seattle, Wash., native and former quarterfinalist in Season 2 of The Contender, hasn't fought since a six-round unanimous-decision win over Joshua Snyder in 2010, but he's remained active throughout his layoff, most notably as a training partner for James Kirkland during his preparation for bouts against Alfredo Angulo and Carlos Molina, which were held in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Wright had also been preparing for his own comeback in June against Omar Henry, but that fight fell through at the last minute.

In 2006, Wright won his opening bout on Season 2 of The Contender in convincing fashion, beating Andre Eason 50-44 on all three scorecards before losing in the quarterfinals to future world champion Cornelius Bundrage. Later that year, Wright returned for the Season 2 finale at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and defeated fellow castmateVinroy Barrett by fourth-round knockout. Proving his success under the bright lights was no fluke, Wright faced off against then-unbeaten junior middleweight Dan Wallace in January of 2007 on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights and scored a knockout win in the eighth and final round.

Dieting with The Boss
Benny Costantino (7-2, 4 KO) breaks down all the diet myths that won't die!
1) Carbs do not make you fat - extra calories do.
2) Ab exercises do not trim your waisteline
3) Many smaller meals will not speed up metabolism
4) Protein shakes do not make bigger muscles
5) Want bigger muscles? Exercise less, but harder

From the MMA Division
Fights are being announced for CES MMA's next fight card on April 12th at Twin River Casino.

That night you can see CES champion John "Doomsday" Howard as well as a special rematch between Todd "The Hulk" Chattelle and Dennis Olson, on a night when both fighters will celebrate their 20th professional bout!  While these may be some of the bigger names on the card, it's the match up of Dinis Paiva Jr. and undefeated Kin Moy that seems to be grabbing the headlines!

This past week, the fighters took to social media to announce their feelings on this upcoming fight:
Dinis Paiva: "Looking forward to the fight. Kin is a warrior and an all-around humble guy. Let's give the fans a hell of a show! I consider it an honor to be with you in that cage doing what we do best. Let's give the MMA world something to see!"
Kin Moy: "Dinis, we had to do a lot of thinking when we decided whether I was ready to step up to this level of competition. I'll be training harder than ever and I know that you always bring it. People will NOT forget this fight!"

Halle Berry happy to be back for 'X-Men' sequel

Last week, director Bryan Singer hinted that Halle Berry could reprise her role as Storm in his upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and the Oscar-winning actress has since confirmed the news to CNN.

"I'm going to be there. I don't know how [much] of the old cast will be there, but I think we're pretty official," Berry said Saturday.

"I loved her and the people love Storm ... so I'm happy to come back," she continued. "And I love working with Hugh Jackman [who plays Wolverine]. Bryan Singer is back directing ... so it'll be good. Ian McKellen is back and Patrick Stewart is back, so it's good.

SEATTLE NATIVE WALTER Wright, a quarterfinalist on Season 2 of The Contender reality series, will face fellow Contender alum and Rhode Island native Peter Manfredo Jr. on March 15th at Twin River Casino.
Wright answers the call; will face Manfredo Jr. March 15th

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 4th, 2013) - As he continues to rewrite his future in professional boxing, Peter Manfredo Jr. must first revisit his storied past, reliving his glory days as a fan-favorite on the hit reality television series The Contender.

With Joey Spina unable to fight due to an injury, thus squashing what was shaping up to be a highly-anticipated rematch between two of Rhode Island's most beloved fighters, Manfredo Jr. (38-7, 20 KOs) will now face fellow Contender alum Walter Wright (14-3, 7 KOs) in the 10-round main event of "Unfinished Business" Friday, March 15th, 2013 at the Twin River Event Center, presented by Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment & Sports.

"I like Walter from The Contender Season 2, and I'm also glad he's stepping up on just two weeks' notice," said Manfredo Jr., who rose to fame in 2005 when he reached the finals of the show's inaugural season. "That's why he's a true contender.

"I was training and preparing for Joey Spina, so now I have to get mentally ready for a whole different fight and fighter, but, at the end of the day, the fans will see a great fight."

Wright, a Seattle, Wash., native and former quarterfinalist in Season 2 ofThe Contender, hasn't fought since a six-round unanimous-decision win over Joshua Snyder in 2010, but he's remained active throughout his layoff, most notably as a training partner for James Kirkland during Kirkland's preparation for bouts against Alfredo Angulo and Carlos Molina, which were held in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Wright had also been preparing for his own comeback in June against Omar Henry, but that fight fell through at the last minute.

"I'm even more excited about this bout than I was for the potential Joey Spina-Peter Manfredo rematch," Burchfield said. "The Contender has thrilled boxing fans for years with its candid, in-depth look at the sport of boxing, and its showcasing of great, young talent, and both Peter and Walter are two of the brightest, most successful stars to emerge from the fray.

"Because of their determination and perseverance, they've succeeded where other Contender alums have failed, and they're both as hungry as ever to make another run at a world title, so it's only fitting they meet face-to-face in front of what will be a sold-out crowd at the beautiful Twin River Casino on March 15th."

In 2006, Wright won his opening bout on Season 2 of The Contender in convincing fashion, beating Andre Eason 50-44 on all three scorecards before losing in the quarterfinals to future world champion Cornelius Bundrage. Later that year, Wright returned for the Season 2 finale at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and defeated fellow castmate Vinroy Barrett by fourth-round knockout. Proving his success under the bright lights was no fluke, Wright faced off against then-unbeaten junior middleweight Dan Wallace in January of 2007 on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights and scored a knockout win in the eighth and final round.

For Manfredo Jr., "The Pride Of Providence," this is the second fight of his much-heralded comeback, which began in November with a unanimous-decision win over Rayco Saunders at Twin River. Tickets for the event are $40.00, $60.00, $100.00 and $150.00 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling CES at 401.724.2253/2254, online at www.shop.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Players Club booth at Twin River, or through any TicketMaster location. Doors open 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7.

Still undefeated

Williams, Vincent keep their perfect records intact on undercard of ESPN showcase

LEDYARD, Conn. (March 1st, 2013) – Shelito Vincent and Jimmy Williams made easy work of their opponents Friday, winning every round of their respective bouts to earn shutout victories at Foxwoods Resort Casino’s MGM Grand Theater.

Vincent (8-0) and Williams (2-0, 1 KO), both part of Jimmy Burchfield’s stable at Classic Entertainment & Sports, starred on the undercard of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and rap mogul 50 Cent’s SMS Promotions.

Vincent, a New London, Conn., native, followed up her impressive win over Nydia Feliciano in January with another dominant performance Friday, out-boxing the scrappy Mikayla Nebel (0-4) of Ohio to earn a 40-36, 40-36, 40-36 decision in the female bantamweight division. Williams, a New Jersey native who now lives and trains in New Haven, Conn., followed suit with an equally-impressive, 40-36, 40-36, 40-36 win over Georgia’s Raynard Younger in a four-round welterweight bout. For Williams, it was his second nationally-televised bout; his debut win over Noel Garcia aired live on NBC Sports Network’s Fight Night series.

Russia’s Evgeny Gradovich (16-0) upset Australia’s Billy Dibb (35-2) in the main event by split decision, 114-112, 112-114, 114-112, to win Dibb’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) featherweight title while Cleveland’s Willie Nelson (20-1-1, 12 KOs) destroyed Michael Medina (26-4-2) via first-round knockout to retain his North American Boxing Federation (NABF) light middleweight title in the scheduled 10-round co-feature. Nelson sent Medina to the canvas twice and finished him for good at the 2-minute mark.

Also on the undercard, light welterweight Luis Olivares (1-0, 1 KO) debuted with a first-round knockout win over Rafael Munoz (1-2) at the 1:38 mark while New England’s Luis Rosa (13-0) and Ryan Kielczewski (16-0) each kept their perfect records intact with eight-round, unanimous-decision wins. New Haven’s Rosa stood toe-to-toe with Jhovany Collado (4-7-2) of Queens and earned an 80-71, 80-71, 80-71 win in the super bantamweight division while the 23-year-old Kielczewski, a Quincy, Mass., super featherweight, dominated Texas’ Gil Garcia (5-4-1), 80-72, 80-72, 79-73.
