MAYOR HARP TO WELCOME NEW DIRECTOR OF LIBERTY COMM. SERVICES AT CITY HALL MONDAY

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp will be joined by board chairman Jim Travers Mondaymorning when they introduce and welcome the new executive director of Liberty Community Services at a City Hall ceremony.

Liberty Community Services (LCS) is a New Haven-based nonprofit that provides a range of housing and support services, dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, mental health issues, and those living with HIV/AIDS. LCS is replacing John Bradley, who moved away recently after leading the agency for more than ten years.

Monday’s ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Floor 2 of City Hall – 165 Church Street – in New Haven. .

Liberty Community Services is celebrating its 30^th anniversary this year, incorporated in 1987 by a group of volunteers as the Connecticut AIDS Residence Program (CARP). Over time CARP changed its name to Liberty Community Services and expanded its mission and programs. Last year, LCS provided housing and other supportive services to some 800 people in New Haven.

Vaughn Alexander vs. Elvin Ayala to Headline the Third Installment of Mohegan Sun's Rising Stars Boxing Series Thursday, October 5

Uncasville, CT: Main Events is proud to announce the next installment of Mohegan Sun's Rising Stars Boxing Series, set to take place on Thursday, October 5 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The main event is a ten-round middleweight battle between St. Louis native Vaughn Alexander (10-0, 7 KOs) and middleweight contender Elvin Ayala (29-9-1, 13 KOs). Tickets start at $40 and are available now at Ticketmaster.com and the Mohegan Sun box office.

Alexander, 31, the older brother of former IBF Welterweight World Champion Devon Alexander, is rising quickly through the middleweight division after his boxing career was derailed during a decade-long stint in prison. Since getting back on track and debuting under the Main Events banner in November of 2016 on the pilot of the Mohegan Sun's Rising Stars Boxing Series, Vaughn has increased his record to a perfect ten wins and no losses, with seven knockouts. This will be his third time fighting in front of the fans at Mohegan Sun in less than a year, but his first time fighting a local favorite.

Ayala, 36, is a boxing veteran who lives in nearby New Haven, Connecticut. His win/loss record can be deceiving; his resume includes fights against some of the toughest competition in the division including his IBF World Title fight against Arthur Abraham, former IBF Middleweight World Champion David Lemieux, Curtis Stevens, Sergio Mora, Sergiy Derevyachenko and Derrick Findley. Ayala is looking to prove he is still a contender in the middleweight division by earning a win over am intimidating prospect.

When asked about this fight, a confident Vaughn said, "I wanna thank all involved in putting this show on: my team, Main Events and another victim in my way on the rise to greatness."

His manager, George Jakovic, added, "Vaughn can't wait to get in the ring again. He definitely has respect for Elvin Ayala, a man who has fought for the middleweight crown and been in there with some world class fighters, but Mr. Ayala is just another step towards Vaughn Alexanders goal: to be the middleweight champion of the world. WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS WELTERWEIGHT Khiary Gray, seen above right in his last 154-pound bout against reigning New England champion Greg Vendetti in June, makes his debut at 147 against New Jersey veteran Juan Rodriguez Jr. on Saturday, Sept. 16th, 2017 at Twin River Casino. The entire 12-fight card will air live on FITE Pay Per View. Gray is looking to rebound from a loss to Vendetti in June and make his presence in the welterweight division. Other bouts include Ray Oliveira Jr. battling David Wilson, plus the return of Anthony Marsella Jr. and Juiseppe Cusumano.

Coming off a loss to Greg Vendetti on June 9^th, the resilient Gray will now test the waters in the welterweight division, starting out strong against the veteran Rodriguez Jr., who last fought in August of 2016, dethroning 20-fight vet Alex Perez by split decision.

Rodriguez Jr. is best known for his epic July of 2015 bout against Rhode Island'sNick DeLomba in which he sent DeLomba to the canvas in the opening round before getting stopped in the fifth. Gray, despite losses in three of his last four bouts, owns a lifetime 10-2 record at Twin River and headlines for the sixth time in his fast-rising career.

While Gray-Rodriguez provides excitement and the potential for fireworks in the welterweight division, Oliveira-Wilson could steal the show as yet another tough test for both stellar junior middleweights. Coming off his first career loss in April, Oliveira Jr. jumps right back into the fire in a six-round bout against the dangerous Wilson, who battled to a draw with unbeaten Kendrick Ball Jr. in his last bout in July of 2016.

Speaking of Ball Jr. (7-0-2, 5 KOs), the 24-year-old Worcester middleweight returns for the 10^th time in just 16 months on Sept. 16^th when he battles Durham, N.C., vetPablo Velez Jr. (7-1-1, 5 KOs) in a six-round bout. Ball Jr.'s last four opponents boast a combined record of 16-1-3, including previously unbeaten Godson Noel, whom Ball Jr. defeated in June.

The Sept. 16^th undercard also includes several intrastate rivalries and regional showdowns, among them a four-round featherweight bout between Jonathan Perez (2-1-2, 2 KOs) of Lawrence, Mass., and unbeaten Providence native Ricky Delossantos (2-0), plus a potential four-round showstopper in the welterweight division between Stoughton, Mass., native Travis Demko (4-1, 1 KO) and fellow Massachusetts native Marqus Bates (2-1, 2 KOs) of Taunton.

Super featherweight Michael Valentin (1-0, 1 KO) of Providence, who debuted with a sensational first-round knockout win in June, returns to face newcomerHenry Garcia of New Bedford in a four-round bout and Providence featherweight Phil Dudley (1-0) locks horns with Worcester's Philip Davis (0-1), also in a four-round bout. In the cruiserweight division, Worcester's Jake Paradise makes his professional debut against fellow newcomer Rafiel Nyakoko, also of Worcester, in a four-round showcase bout.

Also on the undercard, Groton, Conn., bantamweight Marcia Agripino (1-0-1) ends a four-year layoff she faces New York vet Federica Bianco (2-1, 1 KO), a full time astrophysicist and research scientist at New York University. Agripino last fought in Rhode Island in 2013, defeating Vanessa Greco in her pro debut.

Cusumano and Marsella Jr. will also be featured on the undercard in separate six-round bouts. Marsella Jr. faced his toughest test to date in June, picking himself up off the canvas in the fifth round against Texan Abraham Torres before coasting to a unanimous decision win, his fourth in a row at Twin River.

Cusamano, originally from Sicily and now living and training in Virginia, made his Rhode Island and CES Boxing debut in grand fashion in June, sending Dan Biddleto the canvas three times in the second round before referee Eddie Claudiostopped the bout with 24 seconds to go. Cusumano has now won nine consecutive bouts, seven by knockout.

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp will swear-in and officially welcome the New Haven Fire Department’s (NHFD) newest assistant chief at a City Hall ceremony Thursdayevening, August 3. Assistant Chief of Administration Orlando Marcano, who will be second-in-command, has served in the NHFD for 23 years.

Thursday’s ceremony is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held in the first-floor atrium at City Hall: 165 Church Street in New Haven.

A reception will be held afterward and refreshments will be served.

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp and Department of Parks, Recreation, and Trees Director Rebecca Bombero announced today a two-week extension of the city’s Open Gym / Open Activities recreational opportunities this summer.

The five-week city-sponsored program was scheduled to end last Friday; it will now operate through Friday, August 11.

These are the extended days and hours for program sites citywide:

Floyd Little Athletic Center fieldhouse:

daily from 4:00 - 8:00 (except Thursdays when it’ll be open from 4:00 - 6:00).

The Hillhouse High School swimming pool is also open daily from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.and Saturdays from 11:00 – 3:00 until August 11.

Open Gym at the John Martinez School:

Monday – Friday from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.

The swimming pool is open from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday – Friday and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. until August 11.

The Conte pool and the Career High School pool are open from 5:00 – 7:00weekdays and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. until Friday August 11.

Career/ Ross Woodward outside activities will operate Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on the athletic fields behind the schools through August 11.

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp will host a ‘mayor’s night in’ from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at City Hall – at 165 Church Street.

Mayor Harp will be available to residents for these public ‘office hours’ during which residents are invited to ask questions, make suggestions, and otherwise address matters pertaining to New Haven and its governance.

The timing of this session is particularly important as New Haven continues waiting for enactment of a state budget; the new Fiscal Year began July 1.

Residents’ questions and comments will be addressed on a first come, first served basis. No advance reservations or appointments are required or necessary.

News outlets are encouraged to help notify city residents ahead-of-time about the plan for this event; likewise, members of the press are invited to attend and cover these proceedings as well.

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp will welcome special guests from around the state to City Hall Tuesday morning for a joint announcement about a new twist on this year’s ‘Hoop it Up’ three-on-three basketball tournament.

The officials will be joined by New Haven native, 2017 Notre Dame graduate, and imminent Louisville freshman Tremont Waters, regarded by many to be among the nation’s top basketball point guards.

Tomorrow’s joint announcement will be at 11:00 a.m. on the steps of New Haven City Hall: 165 Church Street in New Haven.

Three-person basketball teams from Hartford, Bridgeport, and Waterbury will travel and compete against New Haven teams; New Haven will host the tournament this weekend,August 5 – 6. New Haven’s Department of Youth Services is organizing the event, meant to foster friendly, spirited competition among young people from all four cities.

The tournament is one more part of a strategy to help keep young people engaged and productive this summer. Complementing the ‘Hoop it Up’ tournament will be a festival of food, fun, and music on the New Haven Green on both Saturday and Sunday.
