CITY OFFICIALS SEEK PUBLIC INPUT THURSDAY AS THEY WORK TOWARD ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION MASTER PLAN
GOAL IS TO IMPROVE CITY STREETS AND INTERSECTIONS
New Haven, CT – The city’s Department Thursday at which public input will he of Transportation, Traffic & Parking will host a community workshoplp create its first-ever Active Transportation Master Plan.
The goal of the event is to identify intersections and streets that need improvements for safety and walkability – members of the public will be asked to help make these determinations.
Areas identified will be included in the Master Plan. Six street improvement projects identified at this workshop will be rolled out across six neighborhoods in the summer and fall of 2019. Residents are encouraged to show up to make sure their neighborhoods are represented.
These improvement projects are a part of a larger plan to increase active transportation in New Haven. “Active transportation” means getting around in a way that is powered by human energy – walking and bicycling, which includes accessing public transportation. Those who live in communities that prioritize active transportation tend to be healthier because they’re more active in their daily routines and the air they breathe tends to be cleaner.

Plans for this workshop are a collaborative effort by the City of New Haven Department of Transportation, Traffic & Parking, the Cornell Scott Hill Health Center, Street Plans, and Community Alliance for Research & Engagement (CARE).

Dawson's resume in the light heavyweight division is unmatched, and his history with CES Boxing dates back to the beginning of his career, including his second pro fight when he shared the stage with Rhode Island icon Vinny Paz, who recorded his 48th victory that night. Two years later, the hard-hitting Dawson reached a major milestone of his own, capturing the WBC World Youth Middleweight Title at Foxwoods with a win over Dumont Welliver.
Dawson's rise to prominence continued with NABO and NABF titles in 2005 and 2006, respectively, before he reached the top of the mountain a year later by upending Tomasz Adamek for the WBC World Light Heavyweight Title. Dawson defended the belt three times over the next year and a half, including a win over two-time world champion Glen Johnson. Six months later, he dominated three-time champ Antonio Tarver in the first of their two championship bouts, winning and subsequently defending the IBO and IFO world titles. In 2009, he returned to Connecticut and beat Johnson a second time to capture the interim WBC title and then won the WBC light heavyweight crown a second time in 2012 with a majority-decision victory over the iconic Bernard Hopkins in Atlantic City.
Rankin steps up to face Dawson in the midst of a three-fight win streak dating back to November, highlighted by a fourth-round knockout win over Columbian challenger Neller Obregon in April. The 32-year-old southpaw handed light heavyweight prospect Aaron Casper his first career loss in December and also battled Russian prospect Medzhid Bektemirov, Mike Gavronski and reigning NABA champion Charles Foster of New Haven.
Seventeen years since his professional debut, Dawson has come full circle as he reunites with the promoter who launched his career nearly two decades ago. CES Boxing's June 29th pro-am extravaganza is its 49th event at Foxwoods since the casino began hosting combat sports in 1992. Event No. 50 takes place in December as the second installment of CES Boxing's two-fight series in 2019 and will feature a celebration of some of the best fighters to compete on CES-promoted cards at Foxwoods over the past 27 years.
"I'm glad to be back where it all started and I'm happy to build stronger relationships with CES and collaborate on bigger projects in the future," Dawson said. "CES is where my professional career started, so I'm looking forward to working with them again and working my way to the top. Boxing is life for me and I'm grateful for this opportunity."
The well-traveled Williams makes his Foxwoods debut June 29th in just his second pro fight in his home state. Promoted by Roc Nation Sports, the 26-year-old southpaw has fought everywhere from El Paso to Long Beach, including stops in New Hampshire, Kansas and Pennsylvania.
Williams began his surge toward the top of the featherweight division in 2017, obliterating 30-win vets Christopher Martin and William Gonzalez via knockout in back-to-back bouts. Later that year, he dominated Mexican journeyman German Meraz, a veteran of 120 bouts, by unanimous decision, and then opened 2019 with victories over Jose AlfredoRodriguez and Ernesto Guerrero, who entered with 32 and 31 wins, respectively.
Tabanao may be the toughest test of Williams' career. The 25-year-old native of Mandaue, Philippines, boasts an impressive resume that includes a knockout win over Australian title-challenger Ibrahim Balla, plus a WBC youth title showdown with former world champion Isaac Dogboe in 2016.

Undefeated featherweight Nathan Martinez (3-0, 1 KO) of New Britain and Bridgeport super featherweight Jacob Marrero (3-0, 2 KOs) will be featured in separate four-round bouts. The 20-year-old Marrero debuted with CES Boxing in October, stopping challenger Fierce Taylor at the 2:30-mark of the second round.
The amateur preliminary card is the third installment of the Jimmy Burchfield USA Boxing Amateur Classic. Ten bouts are scheduled, including the amateur debut of Lennox Estrada, the son of former U.S. Olympian and heavyweight contender Jason Estrada of Providence; plus William Guilmette of Coventry, R.I.; 2019 Southern New England Golden Gloves Champion David Ribeiro of Brockton, Mass.; and 2019 New England Golden Gloves Champion Mark Solis of New Haven.

Mayor Toni N. Harp and organizers of the New Haven Caribbean Heritage Festival and the Jamaican American Connection kicked off the sixth celebration of Caribbean culture at City Hall this week. All people who are of Caribbean descent were invited to city hall to mix and mingle and take a group photo documenting their heavy presence in New Haven.
This year’s festival will return to DeGale Field (Goffe Street Park) on June 30, 2019 beginning at 1:00 pm in true “Caribbean style” with time for family, authentic music, dancing, as well as amazing food from several local vendors. This event will begin with a rolling precession of island music and costumed dancers to give the community a taste of carnival; a traditional and highly raved/anticipated parade style event. Rain or shine, everyone young or old is encouraged to come out and indulge in an Caribbean experience like no other.

People of the Caribbean Diaspora have been a part of the rich culture of New Haven since at least the 1900s and will continue to share their beautiful culture with everyone.

New regimen, new approach fuel Boyington ahead of latest challeng

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 24th, 2019) -- Bruce Boyington is all business. While traveling to sunny Redondo Beach, CA, would be a vacation for most, CES MMA's reigning featherweight world champion is there to sharpen his skills in preparation for his first title defense next Friday in Hartford, CT.
The Milford, ME native spent a week and a half training at Blackhouse MMA, home to UFC legends B.J. Penn, Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida, among others. On Friday, May 31st, 2019, he fights for the first time since capturing the then vacant CES MMA title when he faces challengerDan Dubuque (8-2, 2 KOs) in a five-round bout, headlining CES MMA 56 at the Connecticut Convention Center live on UFC Fight Pass.

For Boyington (16-11, 7 KOs), there's a noticeable benefit to training with some of the sport's upper-echelon fighters. He first made the trip a year ago prior to his title bout against former UFC vet Sean Soriano, a fight in which he was a 4-to-1 underdog. Boyington pulled off the upset on AXS TV, submitting Soriano via rear-naked choke at CES 51.
Now the pilgrimage to southern Los Angeles is a must for Boyington, whose experience rolling with the likes of Machida and UFC welterweight contender Kevin Lee is the equivalent of a slugger swinging a weighted bat in the on-deck circle. In addition to expanding his horizons by training out west, Boyington also switched camps a year ago and now works with Titan Athletics in Brewer, which he says has put him in "a whole new category as far as being a fighter goes."
"Nothing against Dan, but when you test yourself against fighters like that and then come back and fight a guy like Dan, it's beneficial to know you're not going against a guy who's as good as those guys," Boyington said. "Maybe he is that good, but he hasn't gone to the UFC and fought guys like that. Mentally, it does a lot for me."
Boyington, who turned 40 in May, uses whatever he can as motivation, whether it's being labeled an underdog by the odds-makers like he was against Soriano, or quips about his age, which seems him to annoy him the most.
A lifelong athlete who has always kept himself in impeccable shape, Boyington feels better than ever as he puts the finishing touches on his latest training camp. He started taekwondo at a young age and enlisted in the U.S. Marines out of high school, eventually teaching taekwondo to corpsmen in between deployments. In his four years of active duty, he spent time in Afghanistan, Greece, Albania and Macedonia and was stationed in Kosovo during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
Life in mixed martial arts has kept him equally well-traveled; in between bouts on the regional circuit, Boyington headlined a fight card in Russia and also faced Andre Harrison at Madison Square Garden four months later for World Series of Fighting. Both the military and MMA have had a profound impact on his life, teaching him discipline and routine and forcing him to adhere to a strict code of ethics he maintains both in and out of the cage. When he's not preparing for an upcoming fight, he runs his own school in nearby Brewer, appropriately named Boyington's Taekwondo Academy.
There's no doubt what keeps him motivated -- it's his love of competition and the burning desire to keep proving people wrong. The underdog mentality has served him well through the years. "I think there's a lot more pressure when you're not the underdog," he said. "I just don't like being counted out. I don't like people underestimating me. People talk about my age, as if that has anything to do with how I am as a fighter, and it fuels me to defy the odds."
Dubuque, a Waterbury, CT, native, will have the crowd on his side as he enters the title fight on a four fight win streak, including his most recent bout at CES 55. But Boyington is more confident than ever in his training and tutelage. In the past, he's had difficulty preparing for fights due to a lack of training partners, or with outside distractions, but his business trip out west helped clear his mind, which may end up being more important than anything else.
"Being out there allowed me to put all of my focus on my training," Boyington said. "When I come home, I'm in a good place, and I get to come out on fight night with an entire team behind me. All of those things play a big role. Rolling with guys who are all pushing me, knowing my body is conditioned, puts me in a good place mentally. It feels great. I'm focusing on all the right things."
CES 56 is available on UFC Fight Pass with Michael Parente handling play-by-play alongside color commentator and longtime UFC vet "Filthy" Tom Lawlor and Canadian MMA analyst Robin Black. Fights start at 6:30 p.m. ET with the live stream beginning at 8.

5/25/19 Annual Sharing Ramadan 7pm – 9pm
Happening at United Muslim Mosque, 132 Prospect Street, Waterbury, There will be a special program at 7P.M. held in the parking lot called "Sharing Ramadan" with neighbors, clergy and dignitaries. We will learn about Ramadan and show brotherhood and sisterhood of humanity. There is plenty of parking around neighboring areas near the masjid and several hundred always attend. Alhamdullah (All praises be to God) Everyone is welcome to attend!!! Special thanks to everyone who will participate. There will be plenty of delicious food including grilled food.

Come down to the New Haven Pride Center, 84 Orange Street, New Haven for a monthly social group hosted by New Haven Pride Center Board Member Joshua O'Connell. This is a free monthly social program for game lovers - from classics like Scrabble to new ones like Ticket to Ride, our monthly Board & Card Games is a LGBTQ+ gathering. Come down to the Whitney Humanities Center, 53 Wall Street, New Haven for a documentary on “Policing in New Haven”. Panel discussion after the movie is shown. Panelists include interim Chief Reyes, Community Activist Barbara Fair, Project Longevity Director Stacy Spell and film director Steve Hamm.
