MAYOR TONI HARP ENDORSES SHAFIQ ABDUSSABUR,
KICKS OFF SIGNATURE DRIVE WITH FIRST SIGNATURE
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Wednesday, July 26, 2023 — Today, Democratic Candidate for Mayor Shafiq Abdussabur was joined by former Mayor of New Haven, Toni N. Harp, community leaders, members of the clergy and other faith leaders for a formal endorsement of the campaign.
“I am supporting Shafiq Abdussabur for Mayor of New Haven,” said Mayor Toni Harp. “I’ve known him since he was a young man and have seen him grow and develop. He is someone who deeply cares about our city. His experience as a police officer working in city government is someone that can move the city forward.”
After brief remarks by candidate Abdussabur, Mayor Toni Harp kicked off the signature drive with its first signature. The campaign is tasked with collecting 1,623 signatures from New Haven registered Democrats over the next two weeks to secure a spot on the September 12th Primary ballot.
“This is what democracy looks like,” added Democrat Shafiq Abdussabur as he shouted out all those in attendance. “Thank you, Mayor Harp. She is a mentor, a friend, and someone I’ve always looked up to as a local leader. This endorsement from the first female and second African-American Mayor of New Haven means so much. Her historic election was such an inspiration, and with your support, we can make this another historic election season.”
The group also included community advocate Barbara Fair, activist Leslie Radcliffe of the Hill North Community Management Team, community leader Stanley Welch, local business owner Allen McCullum, Muhammad Turi of Masjid Al-Islam, and Chris Campbell—Abdussabur’s Campaign Chair and former Senior Advisor to Mayor Harp’s 2013 campaign.
“I was proud to stand alongside Mayor Harp in support of Shafiq Abdussabur,” added Campaign Chair Chris Campbell. “He has the integrity that we look for in a public servant and understands that leadership isn’t about arrogance or entitlement—it's about compassion and understanding.”

He appeared with Paul Mills and the trio that he was performing with.
Earl had a performance scheduled in London the following week, so he went to visit Paul in Scotland and they put Earl on the gig that night.

httVice President Kamala Harris will attend the NAACP National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson released the following statement celebrating the VP's return to NAACP Convention:
"NAACP Convention is one of the few places where everyday Americans have the opportunity to engage with some of our nation's most influential voices. The Vice President's return to convention is further evidence of the NAACP's commitment to ensuring our communities have access to all places where power convenes.
"I am confident that Vice President Harris' presence at convention will further motivate our members and supporters' continued fight for racial justice across all 50 states. We look forward to hearing from the Vice President on how the administration is enacting its commitment to addressing the issues that are top-of-mind for Black America. Last year, Vice President Harris made history as the first Black Woman Vice President to provide a keynote speech at an NAACP Convention. Her remarks focused on the Administration's support for reproductive rights and tighter gun restrictions, and conveyed a promise to reduce disproportionately high maternal mortality rates for people of color.

HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE TO DISCUSS A HOMICIDE ARREST

WHAT: The New Haven Police Department will hold a press conference to announce an
arrest in the homicide case that occurred on April 1, 2023 on Winthrop Avenue near Goffe
Terrace. The press conference will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 11:00 am at the
New Haven Police Department headquarters, located at 1 Union Avenue, New Haven, CT,
06519.
The press conference will provide information on the investigation and the arrest of the
suspect. The identity of the suspect and other details of the arrest will be discussed during
the press conference.
Due to the forecast of inclement weather, New Haven’s fireworks display has been rescheduled to WEDNESDAY, JULY 5th. It will still be a wonderful evening for residents to come together, enjoy the fireworks and celebrate our nation’s independence. The fireworks will be set off atop East Rock Park around 9 pm and will last about 25 minutes.
The official viewing site is the Wilbur Cross High School athletic fields, but you can see the fireworks from many locations around the City. A good rule of thumb is if you can see the summit of East Rock Park, you’ll see the fireworks. Also, parking at Wilbur Cross is limited so please plan accordingly -- it may be faster to park a few blocks away and walk from there, as the traffic leaving the event takes some time to clear out.
Finally, a note on safety: please leave the fireworks to the professionals. Fireworks are dangerous and can result in serious injury and fires. Only sparklers and fountain fireworks are permitted by those 16 years of age or older – all other fireworks are illegal. Police and Fire Marshals will be out enforcing these regulations.
