The city of New Haven is preparing for extremely cold temperatures this weekend – with lows of 10 and 8 degrees projected for tonight and Saturday. Extended exposure to extremely low temps can cause frost bite, hypothermia, and can lead to death.

Individuals in need of refuge may use any of our four library branches on Saturday between 10 AM – 5 PM. The Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen at 266 State Street also offers daytime and overnight warming center spaces through Monday at Noon.

We have seen a significant uptick in COVID-19 cases in the state and now in New Haven. In response to this increase, we are making the following changes to keep the New Haven community safe and reduce the spread of the virus: 

We will not be opening schools in the hybrid model on November 9th as originally planned. Instead, students will continue remote learning, as they have done since the start of the school year. We know this decision creates a hardship on many New Haven families. The Health Director, Dr. Tracey and I did not make this decision lightly. 

Student learning hubs that the City operates will be closed indefinitely starting this coming Monday, November 2nd. Starting next Wednesday, November 4th, City Hall will be closed and accessible by appointment only. 

Furthermore, we are also rolling back opening guidelines for our business community. Starting immediately, the City will move from Phase III to Phase II of COVID-19 reopening. Reducing the occupancy caps for many businesses. Our COVID task force will be increasing enforcement on establishments to ensure we are in compliance. 

It is critical that you do your part to ensure the virus does not spread. The surge in cases is happening because more and more residents are attending social gatherings, parties, and having other interactions with those outside of their core family group. By not following the COVID-19 guidelines from medical experts, you are risking exposure to others who could then lose their lives to the virus. If the number of cases go back down, we will be able to open up again. 

Finally, we continue to offer free COVID-19 testing for anyone in New Haven. Check out the City’s COVID website or call the Health Department at (203) 946-4949 for more information on testing sites. Please be smart about this, New Haven.

The FEMA mobile vaccination clinic is returning to New Haven, this time to Edgewood Park. This free, walk-up vaccine clinic will be available from 10 AM – 5 PM starting tomorrow Saturday, June 12^th and running through Thursday, June 17^th

^{We’re expecting a party like atmosphere in Edgewood Park because FEMA has partnered with WYBC and their street team. There will be a DJ, food offered to those that come and get vaccinated, as well as additional promotions and giveaways.}

I am deeply saddened that we lost Yale School of Environment student Kevin Jiang last night to gun violence. Kevin would have celebrated his 27^th birthday next week.

To those who continue to perpetrate these crimes: you undermine the safety of our residents and yourselves. You continue to promote fear for our safety in our everyday lives. We, as a community, will not stand for this and we will be relentless in efforts to provide justice for all of the victims, their families and loved ones. Addressing and eradicating gun violence takes serious action both in the short-term and the long-term—and the City of New Haven is committed to that. New Haven Health Department Providing Free Home Radon Test Kits,

Encourages Testing for this Silent Killer

January is National Radon Action Month

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The New Haven Health Department is distributing free radon home testing kits and educational materials to New Haven residents during the month of January. To receive a radon test kit, while supplies last, residents should contact 203-946-8174 or visit the department which is located on the ninth floor of 54 Meadow Street. The New Haven Health Department is working with the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in a nationwide campaign to educate Americans about the dangers of radon exposure and to encourage them to take action to protect their homes and families.

Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, tasteless gas that is dispersed in outdoor air, but which can reach harmful levels when trapped in buildings. Scientists have long been concerned about the health risks of radon, but there has never been such overwhelming evidence that exposure to elevated levels of radon causes lung cancer in humans.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General’s office estimate radon is responsible for more than 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. after smoking and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. “However,” says Ms. Roslyn Hamilton, Acting Director of Health, “because you can’t see or smell radon, people tend to downplay the health effects and ignore the possibility that there might be a silent killer in their homes. Testing homes for elevated levels of radon is simple and inexpensive”.

The New Haven Health Department urges New Haven residents to take action during this year’s National Radon Action Month by testing their homes for radon. Radon poses a serious threat to our communities health but there is a straightforward solution. This site will function as a triage site to identify and provide resources to individuals experiencing homelessness while connecting them to medical and behavioral health services, as well as addressing their basic needs like access to food, showers, and an opportunity for shelter.

This is not an overnight facility. Its hours of operation are Monday through Friday 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM. It will serve as a check-in facility where people can use bathrooms, showers, get medical assistance, and take their temperature to ensure they are not showing symptoms of COVID-19.  We understand this site is near East Rock Magnet School, and we assure you that the hours of operation at this site will not overlap with the school meals program nearby.

If you feel you are showing symptoms of COVID-19, please find testing information on the City of New Haven’s website or call the New Haven Health Department Emergency Line at (203) 946-4949.

This is what the News Media and the New Haven Board of Alders ARE NOT telling you regarding Mayor Toni Harp's decision to give raises to her executive and confidential staff:

1) The Mayor's executive and confidential staff raises amounts to 1/20 of 1% of the city budget.

2) Some city employees had not received a raise in the last 20 years.

3) The Mayor's executive staff never received a raise in the last 4.5 years (this was the first raise given since she has been mayor).

4) Local Union 3144 . . . and the New Haven Board of Alders . . . and the mayor's staff received the SAME raises. The Question is: Why was no one upset when the Board of Alders gave it's staff a 12% raise last year (that the union stopped)?? . . . and why is the Board of Alders saying that they are conducting an investigation when it's staff also received the same raise??

The Media is trying to sell newspapers and advertisements . . . The New Haven Board Of Alders is trying to point it's fingers at someone else. What you should know is that only the Board of Alders can raise taxes. They are trying to say that the mayor scared them into doing it. No one believes that. IT IS NOT TRUE! They are not afraid of the Mayor.

• We celebrate King first and foremost for standing up for the self-evident truth Americans hold so dear: No matter the color of our skin, or the place of our birth, we are ALL created equal by God.
• This April will mark half a century since King was cruelly taken from us by an assassin’s bullet. As we mourn his loss, we also pledge to fight for his dream of equality, freedom, justice, and peace.
