The superstar players of Paris Saint-Germain ended 2017 with a stunning world first – a game on a floating football pitch during the club’s Qatar Winter Tour 2017 this week. The friendly game saw players including Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva, playing atop the pitch on the stunning waters of the Arabian Gulf against the dramatic backdrop of Doha’s glittering skyline.
 
The event concluded the team’s time in Qatar as part of its traditional mid-season Qatar Winter Tour.
 
In addition to recording a world’s first, the team also met with thousands of Qatari football fans and indulged in cultural activities organised by the Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA). The team’s packed itinerary included a trip to the magnificent Qatari sand dunes of the Inland Sea for players Adrien Rabiot, Layvin Kurzawa and Marco Verratti, and a taste of Arabian hospitality at a traditional campsite.

 
Back in Doha, Julian Draxler, Thomas Meunier and Presnel Kimpembe learned about Qatar’s culture and history with a visit to the Msheireb Museums, while Dani Alves, Thiago Motta and Kevin Trapp were treated to a traditional Qatari meal on the rooftop of the Shangri-La Hotel, where they had a stunning view of the iconic Doha Corniche.
 
Rashed Al Qurese, Chief Marketing and Promotion Officer at QTA commented, “We are delighted to have once again hosted the Paris Saint-Germain squad in Qatar to explore and enjoy what our country has to offer, from state-of-the art sport facilities to authentic tourist experiences.” He continued, “We are particularly excited to have the team spread Qatar’s message of welcome to the world, following the country’s announcement of visa-free entry to 80 nationalities.” 
 
To connect with their fans – young and old - several players took part in a public signing session as well as a training clinic led by coach Unai Emery. In addition, Paris Saint-Germain FIFA Qatari player Aameghessib and France’s Mannika took part in an esports tournament showcasing top Qatari talent, before taking on several Paris Saint-Germain football players.
 
Since 2012, QTA and Paris Saint-Germain have worked on a strategic partnership to promote Qatar’s sport and leisure tourism offerings.  QTA has hosted several tours for Paris Saint-Germain teams, including the Qatar Handball Tour 2014 and the Qatar Ladies Tour 2015 and the Qatar Winter Tours in 2013 and 2015.
 

22 December, 2017 – PERSON SHOT

At 4:23 AM, Officers were dispatched to reported gunfire in the Ferry Street and Chamber Street area. While en route, dispatchers updated responding officers there was a person shot. The victim was located on the front porch of 222 Ferry Street.

The victim, twenty-two year old Cinque Yrial Preston, of New Haven, had a gunshot wound to his left forearm. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his non-life threatening wound.

Preston would only say he’d been with two others on the porch when they were confronted by a group of three black men. They fired at Preston and his acquaintances and struck Preston. The house was damaged by bullets.

21 December, 2017 – PERSON SHOT

At 8:48 PM, Police and EMTs responded to the area in front of 34 Greenwood Street after calls to 911 and a ShotSpotter® activation reported a person shot and gunfire at that location.

Officers located the victim, fifty-five year old Awilda Cirino, of New Haven, suffering from gunshot wounds to the chest and leg. She was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment.

There is no description of any suspect or suspect vehicle at this time although investigators believe the shooter fled on foot. Detectives collected evidence from the scene.

UPDATE (22 December, 2017 @ 2:18 PM): The victim remains hospitalized in critical – but stable condition.

Police are asking for the public’s help. Anyone who witnessed either of these crime or has information valuable to investigators, is urged to phone detectives at 203-946-6304. Calls may be made anonymously.

New Haven—Mayor Toni N. Harp and Fire Chief John Alston Jr. today issued a reminder about fire safety strategies for the forthcoming holiday season. As more and more residents plan to put up a Christmas tree in their homes, Mayor Harp and Chief Alston reaffirmed their commitment to safety in making their suggestions to city residents about how to stay safe no matter the situation.

“As New Haven residents come together to celebrate the holidays and spend cherished time with loved ones, taking a few precautionary measures now will ensure the safety of family members, neighbors, and community members in the future,” Mayor Harp said.

Chief Alston reminded residents to keep Christmas tree safety in mind beginning when the tree is selected and until it is recycled after the holidays.

In a recent report by the National Fire Protection Association, Christmas tree-related home fires caused over $14 million in damages nationwide. In addition, Christmas tree-related fires were found to be more dangerous than the average house fire, and much of the risk to residents resulted from the tree being placed too close to a heat source.

“Christmas trees bring joy to many holiday celebrations, but is important to recognize how easily they can catch on fire if one does not take the proper precautions. New Haveners must be mindful of any heat source in the vicinity of the tree and ensure that they are a safe distance apart. A little extra attention goes a long way toward keeping the holiday season fire-free,” Chief Alston said.

In addition, Chief Alston issued specific Christmas tree safety guidelines:

• Residents should only choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.

• Before it is set up in the home and placed in the stand, residents should cut two inches from the base of the trunk.

• It is critical that the tree is not obstructing any exits and is placed at least three feet away from any heat source such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights. The tree stand should be watered daily.

• When decorating the tree, it is important to double check that all lighting instruments are fit for indoor use have the label of an independent testing laboratory.

• Candles should never be used on or near Christmas trees as decorations.

• Always replace strings of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulbs, and consult the manufacturer’s instructions for the limit of how many strands to connect.

• When leaving the house or going to bed, always turn off Christmas tree lights.

Finally, Christmas trees should be disposed of promptly after the holiday as they quickly become drier and more flammable with each day, Chief Alston said. Trees should not be left out in the home, in the garage, or outside leaning up against the home. Outdoor lights should be brought inside to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

Welcome Arrival of New Jet Service to Region Wednesday

First American Airlines jet to land midday Wednesday

November 28, 2017 (New Haven, CT) – On Wednesday, November 29 at 11:30 a.m., Mayor Toni N. Harp will join officials of the Tweed New Haven Regional Airport Authority and welcome the arrival of new American Airlines jet service at Tweed New Haven Regional Airport, 155 Burr Street, New Haven.

The airport will launch the new jet service American Eagle, and will begin replacing its 37-seat, Dash 8 turboprop service with 50-seat, CRJ-200 regional jet aircraft. The jet upgrade will offer New Haven passengers a higher level of service and a smoother, quieter traveling experience while also offering an additional 78 seats a day to and from American’s premier global hub in Philadelphia.

American’s jet service connects New Haven passengers to more than 21 countries and 115 destinations with a quick, one-stop connection in Philadelphia. Additional connections can be made from Philadelphia via American’s other hubs to access nearly 350 destinations in more than 50 countries across American’s worldwide network.

The ongoing enhancements and upgrade to the main airport runway will ensure continued operational reliability for American while also opening Tweed to longer distance flights for the future. The growth and increased level of services at Tweed will insure that the airport will continue to be a vital economic engine for the region.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), cooking is the main cause of home fire. Also, the peak day for home cooking fires is Thanksgiving.

Cook Safely for Thanksgiving

• Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the burner.

• Watch what you are cooking. Fires start when the heat is too high. If you see any smoke or the grease starts to boil, turn the burner off.

• If you simmer, bake, or roast food, check it regularly and use a timer to remind you.

• Keep anything that can catch fire (oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packages, towels, and curtains) away from your stovetop.

• Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Then, no one can bump them or pull them over.

• Keep a pan lid or baking sheet nearby.  Use it to cover the pan if it catches fire. This will put the fire out.

• In the event of an oven fire, turn off the oven and keep the door closed until it is cool.

• Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot, and kids should stay three feet away.

• Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

Five Dangers of Deep Frying a Turkey

• Turkey fryers can easily tip over spilling hot oil across a large area.

• An overfilled cooking pot will cause oil to spill over when the turkey is placed inside.

• A partially frozen turkey will cause hot oil to splatter.

• Turkey fryers can easily overheat and start a fire.

• The pot, lid and handles of a turkey fryer can get dangerously hot and cause burn injuries.
