In the main event of the afternoonn cruiserweights Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu (17-1, 11 KOs) and Garrett "The Ultimate Warrior" Wilson (13-8-1, 7 KOs) faced off for the NABF Cruiserweight Title. The ten-round cruiserweight match-up between Mchunu's southpaw style and Wilson's wild style made for an exciting fight. Thabiso landed some clean shots and Wilson countered to no avail. The fifth round was slow with Wilson chasing down Mchunu and Wilson finally landing some shots. The ninth round started off with a bang, both fighters were trading big punches. The crowd began chanting for Wilson and the action started to pick up in the final round with both fighters coming out swinging. In the tenth, the referee deducted a point from Mchunu for holding, but it did not matter as Mchunu retained his NABF Cruiserweight Title with a unanimous decision victory (96-93, 99-90 and 98-91).
After the fight Mchunu said, "First of all thank God. Thank you for supporting me to all my fans in South Africa. My trainer, Sean, and my corner for getting me this victory smooth and easy. I would like to thank all of you for coming to the fight. I had it in mind it was going to be tough, really tough. It was as tough as I expected. He is a strong guy. I knew after three rounds it was going to be tough but then I nearly knocked him out. I knew it was going to be tough and I just can't go for the knockout. I knew it was going to go for the distance. I boxed him. I showed I can think in the ring. I'm smart. I'm fast and elusive."  He added, "I want the WBC belt, there is a guy from Poland [Krzysztof Wlodarczyk] who got it so I am going for him. After that I will fight the other guys like Marco Huck [current WBO champion] and [Yoan Pablo] Hernandez."

"He's fast. I didn't quite listen to my corner like I was supposed to. I dropped the ball on this one but even if he wins that world title, I ain't done," explained Wilson. "I will be right back. It is just the beginning. I may not have gotten the NABF this time but I am going to be back as long as he is willing to rematch me. I wasn't listening to my corner and I paid for it. His defense was pretty good. His defense was really good and I couldn't figure it out the way I wanted to. He kept leaning down and I kept ending up over top of him. I have been making adjustments and hopefully we get a rematch going on. I am going at that belt. Let's keep it going."
Mchunu connected for for 54% (105 of 195) of his power punches whereas Wilson only connected for 23% (54 of 231). Also Mchunu (53 of 211 for 25%) threw more than two times as many jabs as Wilson (18 of 108 for 17%). The total punch comparison also favored Mchunu (158 of 406 for 39% compared to 72 of 339 for 21%).

Starting off the live broadcast on NBC Fight Night was ten-round battle between undefeated lightweight Karl "Dynamite" Dargan (17-0, 9 KOs) and Angino "The Nightmare" Perez (16-6, 14 KOs). The bout started slow with both fighters feeling each other out. Dargan was knocked down in the second and got up with a couple of hard shots at Perez. Dargan knocked down Perez in the fifth but he managed to make it back to his feet. "Dynamite" made quick work of Perez after that and knocked him out with a face first fall a few seconds later to secure the Junior NABF Lightweight Title. Now the 29-year old Dargan has two belts (USBA Atlantic Coast Region Lightweight Title).

In the fight Dargan connected for 42& of his punches (71 of 170) whereas Perez only connected for 17% (38 of 230). Although both fighters threw nearly the same number of power punches (96 for Dargan and 87 for Perez) Dargan connected for almost twice as many of them (50 as compared to 27 for Perez) for 52% when compared to 31% for Perez.

"I knew he could punch and I knew he got power. He had about a 90% knockout ratio but I don't care who it is. He caught me with a good shot but I wasn't hurt. It was like a buzz. I got back up there. I guess he thought he could pressure me so I just basically lured him in," explained Dargan. "Him coming forward and me being able to step in the middle of it put more power on me. After the first knockdown my corner said just don't come straight for the head; go for the body because he doesn't really expect it." He added, "Of course I don't see anyone in my division I don't see why I can't beat them. I have the dedication so that I can go up against any of them. I use my ability when it is needed."

Perez & Mauras Photo Credits: Daryl Bughman/Main Events
In a lightweight rematch Joseph "Chip" Perez (10-3-2, 3 KOs) and Agustine "The Dancing Jaguar" Mauras (6-0-3, 3 KOs) met for six rounds. Perez and Mauras' previous fight, back in July of this year, ended in a draw.  Both men started the fight aggressively. In this action-packed bout both fighters gave their all and the crowd was pumped to watch these two warriors battle it out for another brutal six rounds. Ultimately, the judges scored the bout 58-56 for Mauras, 58-56 for Perez and 57-57 for a split draw.
"I thought I fought more aggressively this time, explained Perez. "I thought I got the win both times. I am not taking anything away from him and I have nothing against him but I thought I got the win."
Mauras added, "We need an eight-rounder to make the determination. He came to fight and I always come to fight. I will fight him again or anyone else."

Undefeated light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera (13-0, 8 KOs) of Miami, FL knocked out Eric Watkins (10-8-1, 5 KOs) of Harris, NY. Barrera was leading the entire bout but Watkins managed to hold his own. Sullivan managed to finally take down Watkins at 0:24 in the sixth round. After the fight Barrera said, "I feel great. I am very happy with the new team. I am very happy to be training in Big Bear Lake. I want to thank Main Events and NBC for putting this fight on." Barrera remains undefeated after his first fight with his new trainer, Abel Sanchez.

Angino "The Nightmare" Perez

"Nothing to Lose"

Davie, FL:    As Angino "The Nightmare" Perez (17-5, 15 KOs) prepares, with his trainer, Javier Centeno, to face Karl "Dynamite" Dargan (16-0, 8 KOs) on Sept. 20 at Foxwoods Resort Casino and live on broadcast NBC Fight Night, he feels no pressure because, as Centeno puts it, "He has nothing to lose." Angino, or Gino as he is known to those closest to him, is a 31 year old junior welterweight who accepted a fight with the undefeated Dargan at lightweight for the Junior NABF Lightweight Title because the pressure would all be on Dargan. According to Centeno, "Gino is the type of guy that always feels the pressure is on the other guy. He has nothing to lose. He is going in against a guy that is undefeated. Gino has some losses on his record. He's the type of fighter that is just going to go out there, do his work and whatever the outcome is, it is."

For the first time in a long time, Perez and his team have adequate time to prepare at Sweatbox Boxing and Fitness in Davie, FL. For his last several fights, Perez had only one to two weeks' notice but, this time, the Miami native has ample time to prepare. He said, "I am managing myself and promoting myself and there have been no good fights offered to me. The fights I have been offered in the past were always on short notice where I didn't have time to train." But this time is different according to Centeno, "At this point in his career, we want to make a run for something so we need to make sure that we strategize. We need to make sure we get at least five to six weeks minimum training camp before each fight. Training camp has been different because we have been able to work our way into a routine. In the past he had no strategy to do anything; his training camp consisted of getting into the gym, skipping rope, hitting the bags, getting in some sparring and that's it. We've been working on his strength, his endurance and his power and we have been sparring in between as well."

With regards to sparring, Perez and Centeno wanted to find sparring partners to emulate Dargan's style. Centeno said, "I watched Dargan's last fight with Flores as well as his previous fight with Chazz McDowell. We know that Dargan is a counter puncher but he can also be very aggressive. We have been trying to get him in the ring with guys that can do both. Gino likes to bang. He likes to get in there but he's getting older and, if he wants to survive in the fight game, he's going to have to adapt a little bit. We are preparing for everything: preparing for if Dargan comes in aggressive and preparing for Dargan being a counter-puncher."

This fight requires Perez to step down in weight from junior welterweight to lightweight. According to Perez, he has had to make several adjustments to his diet to come in at the lower weight, "This time I am eating healthy and my body feels a lot different and stronger. We have sparred with a lot of heavier guys. I am taking things more serious. I finally decided to take my career into my own hands." Therefore, Centeno is not concerned about Perez making the weight for Sept. 20, "We know he can make the weight and make it comfortably. He's been eating right; his diet has been completely changed. He is just very lean and strong."

Dropping down to a lower weight class sometimes means losing power, but Centeno does not think that will be a problem for Perez because they have been sparring with heavier opponents, "Because Gino has some pop behind his punches, and we tend to go through a lot of the lighter guys pretty quickly. We wanted to make sure we were getting some heavier guys in who can really bang so they can take some of his power. Our sparring sessions have really impressed me. He is really strong even against some of these heavier guys. We have had guys in there sparring with him at 165 or 170, they are getting hit and they are feeling it."

REIGNING NEW ENGLAND Light Heavyweight champion Rich Gingras of Lincoln, R.I., will face UBF Northeast champion Joey McCreedy in the main event of CES Boxing's "Title For Title" card Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 at Twin River Casino. Both belts will be on the line in the eight-round bout as Gingras fights for a title for the second time in his last three fights.

motionmailapp.com

Between trading punches with opponents in the ring and showing off the results of his hard work in the gym on stage, it's been a while since Rich Gingras has taken a well-deserved break from his routine.

Twenty-two days after beating Jaime Velazquez in June for the vacant N.E. Light Heavyweight title, Gingras participated in his first bodybuilding competition, bruises and all.

A month later, he and his wife, Alyssa, competed in another fitness show in Las Vegas alongside some of the world's elite bodybuilders. On Friday night, just 32 days since they stepped off the stage out west, Gingras will climb back into the ring and battle Joey McCreedy of Lowell, Mass., in the eight-round main event of CES Boxing's "Title For Title" show at Twin River Casino.

Counting calories, cutting weight, logging miles and preparing for each invidual challenge has taken its toll on Gingras these past few months, perhaps more mentally than physically. A break from competition - and his diet - is in order.

"I'm ready to get fat and eat a little bit," he said.

Until then, the task at hand is adding another belt to the trophy case. In addition to defending his N.E. title, Gingras will fight for McCreedy's Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) Northeast title in a unique main event featuring two champions who both consider Twin River their home venue.

"Since he won that belt, I've kept my eye on him," said Gingras, born and raised in New Hampshire and now living and training out of Lincoln, R.I.

"I've been licking my chops wanting to fight him. I'm very excited about this one. The fans will love this fight."

Stylistically, this is a fight fan's dream. Gingras (14-4-1, 9 KOs) and McCreedy (15-7-2, 6 KOs) are practically identical in terms of their approach. Neither fighter will shy away from contact and figure to spend all eight rounds -- or however long it lasts -- looking to inflict as much damage as possible.

"I won't have to chase him around," Gingras said. "We'll meet in the middle somewhere. Whoever has a higher tolerance for pain and can dish out the most punishment will end up winning."

Gingras is confident he'll be the one -- "I can take a punch," he noted -- thanks to his pinpoint diet and impeccable conditioning, making him a stronger, more durable fighter since he began competing at 175 pounds this year instead of 168.

"I'm not a cocky person by any means and I don't take anyone lightly," he said, "but I believe I'm a bigger, stronger individual than him. My conditioning will be the key factor."

Though it's hard to believe now, Gingras was a cruiserweight when he first turned pro in 2006. A change in his diet and conditioning helped him slim down to 168 when he fought Joe Gardner in May of 2013. He also stays in the gym between fights -- literally. He and his wife own one in nearby Pawtucket, so staying motivated to train and live a healthy lifestyle is never an issue.

"I've always had incredible conditioning," Gingras said.

The only time he's ever run out of gas was when he fought Peter Manfredo Jr. in November, but what few people know is Gingras injured his Achilles tendon three and a half weeks before the fight, which prevented him from running or jumping rope for the rest of his camp. He looked strong early, but faded down the stretch before Manfredo Jr. stopped him in the eighth round.

"I never really told anyone about it because I didn't want it to sound like I was making an excuse because he's a tremendous fighter and his experience broke me down," Gingras said. "The difference was in rounds six, seven and eight."

With the Achilles' injury behind him, Gingras is back to his old ways, pushing himself to the limit every time he steps foot inside the gym. His trainer, Orlondo Valles, keeps close tabs on him to make sure he doesn't overextend himself.

"He has to tell me to chill out once in a while," Gingras said of Valles. "I push a little harder than I should sometimes."

The hard work has paid off. Gingras is now a reigning champion in New England with his eyes set on another prize Friday night and, if possible, perhaps a third title down the road if he ever gets a shot at a rematch with the N.E. Super Middleweight Champion Vladine Biosse. The two fought to a disputed draw in July of 2013 (Gingras was initially announced as the winner due to a scorekeeping error), allowing Biosse to retain his title.

"I was shortchanged in that fight," Gingras said. "To have all three belts would be amazing. I have unfinished business to settle there. I could get down to 168 tomorrow if they asked me."

NEW YORK (Sept. 2, 2014) -Bernard "The Alien" Hopkins and Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev held a press conference in New York City and a media roundtable in Philadelphia Tuesday to officially announce their light heavyweight unification bout on Saturday, Nov. 8 taking place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City live on HBO World Championship Boxing®.

Check out what the fighters and promoters had to say below:

BERNARD HOPKINS, WBA & IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion

"When fighters want to fight, this is what happens. When we really want to do it and our promoters do as well, we get it done.

"I take everything I do extremely seriously. But people ask me, how can I continue to do this? I have no plan or timetable when I put my mind to something.

"I want the best. Hagler fought the best. Ray Leonard fought the best. The Alis of the world, they fought the best. I'm from the era where I fought the best and that's important to me. I receive undisputed status in 2001 and that was special.

"I bloomed late. I didn't bloom by the timing of the experts. I want to make it as difficult as possible for you to come up with a headline for me. I don't want to be on the pound-for-pound list because that would make me human.

"What I'm doing now is making a new legacy and a new list and a new way to judge. 'Where do we put this man? We can't put him in the top 10. He's doing things no one has done!'

"Enjoy this while you can and come see it. Don't worry about when or how I'm going to leave or break down. You guys are all humans, I understand you, but you don't understand me.

"The last time I heard, he [Kovalev] can box. He's shown that he can box...People are traumatized by the punch and the knockout.

"I've been in the game for almost three decades. I look for more of what a guy brings to a gunfight other than bullets...The sweet science is not based on only one thing you can do particularly well.

"If he comes in the game thinking a punch is all he'll need, he might be right, so you should watch.

"I'm walking a tightrope hundreds of feet in the air. He crushes people. Only three or four people survive his hammer.

"There's no pressure on me but one thing that is on Bernard Hopkins - that no other fighter really has to do deal with because they've never been in my situation is - how I continue to keep making history

"Anybody at the right time and the right place can get knocked out. It is his job to do what others try to do. It is my job to do what I've been doing.

"Come November 8 on HBO you get to watch artwork. You're watching Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong with gloves on.

"It's such a testimony to see a 50-year-old man - less than 100 days from now - go 30 plus minutes with a young strong Russian puncher and not get a scratch on him.

"I understand humans have a timeline of when they are supposed to go. Age 35 and you're done - I don't care what sport you're in. It's a fact. I don't know what type of evidence I need to show I'm an alien other than what is there."

SERGEY KOVALEV, WBO Light Heavyweight World Champion

"It is not easy to overlook Hopkins. I think when he's 60 years old he'll be in the same condition. He's an alien, but I have to send him to the moon and maybe from there he'll go by himself to Mars.

"I want to say that one day in Big Bear when I trained, I met Oscar De La Hoya and asked him to sign me and he turned me down, but now here we are on different sides.

"I am not a talker, I am a fighter and I am sure Bernard will promote the fight for both of us.

"I don't really understand what Bernard is saying. It doesn't matter what he says. Even if I understood, I wouldn't care. I don't worry about him. I'll go into the ring and do my job.

"Bernard talks and fights. I just fight.

"I can't say what the fight will be like. This is boxing and anything can happen.

"It is my secret what I will do on fight night. I will give it my all and come out with the win."

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, President & Founder of Golden Boy Promotions

"This fight is the best against the best in the light heavyweight division.

"I really do feel that this is not just a fight, but an event. I am glad that it's on HBO and I'm glad its not on pay-per-view, which it easily could have been, but you have to give credit to the fighters who are doing it for the fans.

"I believe that many people over the years have doubted Bernard Hopkins. He's over 40-years-old, how can he win? All of those questions are no longer being asked. Everything that he does, he deserves.

"At 49-years-old, being the oldest champion in any sport, he deserves tons of respect. The fact that he's facing the 'Krusher,' is just another of the many dangerous fighters that Bernard has faced.

"Being the best middleweight in the history of this sport, with 20 defenses and now to be 49 at light heavyweight, he's still going strong. I'm now convinced he is an Alien."

KATHY DUVA, CEO of Main Events

"This fight is going to be the most anticipated fight of 2014. It's so much fun putting together a fight like this that everyone wants to see. Its great to see the excitement level and the anticipation, you can feel it in the air.

"This is going to be a tremendous event. It's one of those fights that when the bell rings you really won't know what is going to happen. It's not about finding out who's best, its about who is going to win the fight, because both are great.

"This is what boxing is supposed to be and we look forward to November 8.

"The first person I thought of when I saw Sergey Kovalev in the ring was Ray Leonard. I saw the look in his eye and I could tell he was different. I believe he is the most electrifying boxer in the world of boxing and he will prove it on November 8."

KEN CONDON, Caesar's Entertainment Consultant

"This is an Atlantic City fight, it's in Bernard's backyard and this is where the fight belongs.

"Sergey has also developed a great following from his last two fights in Atlantic City.

"Caesar's stepped up to the plate and continued its tradition of great championship boxing in Atlantic City. We believe in the future of Atlantic City and we believe in boxing. We expect a sellout on November 8."

AARON DAVIS, NJSAC Director

"November 8 is going to be a nice fight with premier fighters and premier promoters. We want to keep on the legacy that we have created in New Jersey."

Feeling green...

Feeling green...

Green and pail, sick to my stomach, I want to scream; like the Hulk when he's changing, transforming into something big, huge and green!
Illness and green have a lot in common, and so does Marvels Mr Green... They both transform you, rip and tear at you until you're almost unseen!
Both a big and scary making people run! Some run away from you screaming with fear. And others stand still, looking on unable to believe what their eyes are seeing!
Both make you stand out sometimes, "She the one that turns green!" - No longer hidden to those who know you, but to those who don't - your just an "Ordinary man!" You blend into the crowd, no one batts even an eye... But then it happens, you feel yourself being ripped and torn... You're sick! You're Green! In sheer and complete horror you ran as fast as you can, not wanting people to see you, to see you turn green!
As you're transforming, being torn and ripped, it takes the green from with in you, it takes the unseen. It puts it on display for the the world to see! Now you're strange, you're different you're a monster that needs to be slain. Little do you or they know something you slowly start to figure out... I'm green! I'm green, I'm big, I'm scary, but I'm still me! I'm still in here, but all you see is green! You may call me "Weak." "A monster." Or even "Ugly." Or "Freak." Yes I'm a monster, big and scary and green! I'm a strong, kick ass person that only you wish that you could be! Now you're green with envy, jealous of the attention, the looks, the getting talked about! You run before, you ran far and wide, but now you see I'm the same person it makes you transform into envy, green, dark and mean! The difference between us is that I am super strong. I am different but that's okay no need to run, because you've known all along underneath it was me. But you chose your side, you were ashamed of me! Now a rip and tear, turn green and scream, but I will always know now that I'm a beast of beauty and power, and you're the one that's "Average & Normal!" You are the one who is unseen, but inside you're a monster ugly and green! You're toxic and selfish and weak! I could easily step on you, but I choose to be kind and step beside you, not over you as you never did. I choose to be strong and kind even in my weakened body I'm still stronger than you! It's your choice to be a monster, it's your choice to be mean. I choose to be kind and caring, but I didn't choose to be green! So try next time to understand someone as they change and transform - they may have something "Different." Now about them, but it's still me... Whether or not you choose to see! I'm proud, saddened, burdened and lucky... Because I'm strong enough to be green and still choose to be me! Because I am strong, I am different, and perhaps I've been tested; either way, I now realise it's okay, I'm not alone, they may not be me, but there are "others!" That turn, change and transform even to the colour green!!!
