3 January, 2016 – ARREST PENDING IN CRASH THAT TOOK THE LIFE OF A TEN YEAR-OLD GIRL
At 9:36 PM, Police and Firefighters were called to the scene of a car crash on Shelton Avenue, between Argyle and Gibbs Street.
A Toyota Prius, operated by Sabrina Tillman (11-30-1982), of Shelton Avenue in New Haven, struck a parked truck. Inside the car were Tillman’s two children – her ten and six year old daughters. Neither were secured in child-safety seats. Tillman’s ten year old daughter suffered major injuries and was unresponsive when EMTs arrived. She was rushed to Yale – New Haven Hospital, where despite the best efforts of medical staff, died from her injuries shortly before six o’clock Monday morning.
Tillman’s six year old daughter suffered minor injuries and is expected to fully recover.
Crash Investigators were at the scene throughout the night and are preparing their case against Tillman. They have sought the results of Tillman’s blood tests from the hospital. The tests should determine if she was intoxicated by drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
Tillman suffered minor injuries.
3 January, 2016 – THREE ARRESTED ON WEAPONS CHARGES (photos attached)
At 4:50 PM, Officers Frank Grillo and Ryan Walker spotted a tan Buick with darkly tinted windows pass by them at east Pearl and Exchange Streets. The tints were too dark and there was no DMV approval sticker affixed to the car.
The Officers recalled that on December 26, 2015, a tan Buick was described in a nearby incident involving gunfire. The Officers were also privy to information on an ongoing dispute between two groups in the neighborhood.
The Officers got behind the Buick and checked the registration. No record existed. As the Officers followed the car, it’s operator made several turns, eventually making it back to East Pearl Street near Pierpont Street. The Officers initiated the stop and the operator pulled over.
The Officers tapped at the window – unable to see inside. The window was lowered and the Officers were hit with the pungent smell of marijuana.
The Officers asked the driver, James Murphy (2-21-1988), of Carmel Street in New Haven, for his license, registration and proof of insurance… oh, and the marijuana.
The car was, in fact registered. The unsmoked marijuana, which was separated in packaging consistent with street-level dealing, was in the car’s center console. More marijuana was found in the sweatshirt pocket of one of the two passengers, Naquan Murphy (7-31-1995), of Quinnipiac Avenue in New Haven. The third passenger, Alfred Smith Jr (12-20-1987), of George Street in New Haven, had no drugs on him.
The drugs tested positive. The Officers searched the car’s passenger compartment. They found a fully loaded, silver Smith & Wesson .357 revolver beneath the front seat. A record check of the gun’s serial number turned up nothing.
None of the three men stopped had a pistol permit. All are convicted felons.
Smith was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm and possession of under four ounces of marijuana. Naquan Murphy was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of under four ounces of marijuana and possession of under four ounces of marijuana within 1,500 feet of a school zone. James Murphy was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, criminal possession of a firearm, possession of under four ounces of marijuana and possession of under four ounces of marijuana within 1,500 feet of a school zone, possession of under four ounces of marijuana with the intent to sell and the same within 1,500 feet of a school zone.
2 January, 2016 – STABBING VICTIM REMAINS UNCOOPERATIVE
At 10:18 PM, Officers were dispatched to an apartment on the two-hundred block of English Street. A woman had phoned Police to report her boyfriend had been stabbed.
The Officers arrived and found the victim, twenty-six year old Darrin Winfrey. He’d suffered an inch-long laceration to his lower back. The victim was stabbed on the street near 217 English Street. He then went to his girlfriend’s apartment.
Winfrey wasn’t cooperative. His girlfriend told Detectives Winfrey was drunk, having consumed a bottle of “4Loko”. She said he went to a nearby Bodega to purchase some “loosies” (single cigarettes). When he returned, she said he collapsed. She said she thought it was because he was intoxicated. She soon realized he’d been stabbed and phoned for help.
Detectives are investigating the probability this assault was gang related. Winfrey refused to offer up any information at all. He was hostile toward Officers, EMTs and hospital staff alike. He expected to recover fully. The case remains open as detectives peruse some surveillance footage from the area. The assailant(s) have not been described.
1 January, 2016 – MAN ASSAULTED IN MOTEL FOR BOOZE
A late-night robbery was reported to Police. Officers were dispatched to The New Haven Inn on Pond Lilly Avenue to investigate.
The victim (age not provided) told the Officers he was in the room with a woman when five men barged in. he said one choked him with a belt while the others beat him up. They made off with his cell phone and his backpack containing bottles of liquor.
The victim said one of his assailants was a Hispanic man named “Paul”. Another was a redheaded white man. He couldn’t describe the others but said all were between 5’08” and 5’10”.
The victim had some visible bruises and was taken to the hospital for a checkup.
28 December, 2015 – ROBBERY INVESTIGATION
Officers were dispatched TO 112 Ivy Street after a man reported he’d been robbed of his cell phone.
The victim, a man from Hamden, CT, advertised his phone for sale. He had a prospective customer on Ivy Street and went there to sell it. He handed the man his I-phone. The man looked it over and took off with it.
The victim said he ran after the crook until he turned and pressed what he perceived to be a handgun to his stomach. He said the robber told him to chill out, before running into a multi-family home.
The victim described the thief as a black man between nineteen and twenty years old. He is between 5’08” and 5’10”, about 220 pounds and is bearded. He wore a black knit cap, grey or black sweatpants, a black “Champion” brand sweatshirt and white sneakers.
He was not apprehended
