BANTAMWEIGHT DINIS PAIVA, right, seen here in his win over Joe Cushman in June, returns to the cage Friday, Jan. 30th, 2015 to face Matt Doherty of Salem, Mass., on the main card of "CES MMA XXVII" live from Twin River Casino on AXS TV. Friday's fight is Paiva's network television debut as the East Providence, R.I., native looks to win his third consecutive fight and build off a perfect 2014.

11020622699?profile=original

Paiva hopes to build off a successful 2014 with a win Friday in his network TV debut

LINCOLN, R.I. (Jan. 27th, 2015) -- The trophy was a nice touch. The glowing recommendation from his father meant even more.

After switching trainers in 2014, helping him win both of his fights and earn the award for New England's Most Improved Fighter, featherweight Dinis Paivaenters the next chapter of his career Friday night with another key addition to his corner.

"My father has been an important figure in my life, but he hasn't always been my biggest fan," said the East Providence, R.I., native, who makes his network television debut Friday, Jan. 30th, 2015 when he faces Matt Doherty on the main card of "CES MMA XXVII" live on AXS TV from Twin River Casino.

"Knowing he's on the other side of the camera watching me and following me is more motivating than I can put into words."

Growing up in a Portuguese family, Paiva's father was always partial to soccer. Combat sports were a foreign concept. He didn't dislike MMA. He just didn't understand it.

"He's growing to like it," Paiva said. "I even catch him watching UFC every now and then."

He won't be watching Friday's event cageside at Twin River, but he will be watching from his second home in Florida, rooting for his son with a close group of friends.

"Before he left, he told me, 'Listen, I've got all these guys down here who are big fans. They're coming over to watch the fight. You've got to get past this 5-5 record. You've got to do this!' It motivates me," Paiva said. "I got teary-eyed knowing my father is proud. He's falling in love with the sport through me."

The new-and-improved Paiva (5-5, 3 KOs) faces a tremendous challenge against Doherty (3-1, 2 KOs), a Salem, Mass., native who hasn't fought since April when he suffered his first career loss to current UFC bantamweight Tateki Matsuda. But this isn't the same inconsistent Paiva who wandered the first three years of his career, alternating wins and losses and struggling to develop rhythm.

Paiva now trains out of the Cape Cod Fighting Alliance (CCFA) under the guidance of veteran trainer and former pro Mike Gresh, a decision he admits was one of the most difficult of his career, but one that has been validated by his recent success.

Gresh, nicknamed "Loco Lobo," has helped Paiva mature both physically and mentally, an important key to his turnaround in 2014. Paiva won both of his fights last year, highlighted by his thrilling first-round knockout win over Joe Cushman in June, and Gresh earned his own slice of recognition by winning the N.E. Trainer of the Year award.

"Most importantly, I believe in myself," Paiva said. "For the longest time, I just fought to fight because I'm a nutcase. I love the sport. But I really believe in myself now. I know I belong at the top of my division among the best 135-pounders in New England.

"It was more of a mental block than anything else," he continued. "I would win, then I'd lose, then I'd win, then I'd lose again. It took someone like Gresh, who's been around the game so long, to show me and expose me to everything. I'm mentally strong. He told me I'd be top 10 by the end of the year, but I didn't believe it until it started happening."

"He's like the Obi-Wan Kenobi of New England MMA. He's trained me in my Jedi mindset.

Paiva's knows the hardware doesn't mean much unless he keeps improving in 2015, starting with Friday's fight against Doherty, which could be a turning point in his young career. Thanks to the network television audience, he'll have plenty of support, starting in his hometown of East Providence and stretching all the way to Florida, where his biggest fan will be watching.

"Actions speak louder than words," Paiva said. "You hear guys all the time tell you how they're 10 times better than they were, so on and so forth, but what I've done speaks for itself. I've improved a lot. Come Friday night against a tough guy like Matt Doherty, it's going to show.

"I can't be broken. I can't be beat at this point with the mental strength I have."

Tickets for "CES MMA XXVII" are on $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All bouts are subject to change.

Two title bouts highlight the main card, including Bourne, Mass., welterweight Chuck O'Neil (14-6, 4 KOs) defending his CES MMA title against Jersey City's Manny Walo (7-1-1, 1 KO) in a five-round bout and a five-round lightweight showdown between CES MMA's reigning 155-pound champion, Julian Lane (8-3-1, 1 KO) of Mansfield, Ohio and Somerville, Mass., challenger Lucas Cruz (7-2, 4 KOs).

Also on the main card, Dedham, Mass., welterweight Brett Oteri (12-5, 1 KO) battles Ludlow, Mass., vet Jon Manley (8-2) and Providence's Luis Felix (11-8, 4 KOs) faces D'Juan Owens (11-8-1, 4 KOs) of Durham, N.C.

The undercard of "CES MMA XXVII" features six bouts, including a three-round featherweight showdown between Kyle Bochniak (3-0, 1 KO) of Boston and Long Island vet Thomas English (5-5, 2 KOs) and a lightweight bout between battle-tested veteran Jeff Anderson (11-9, 2 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., and Medford, Mass., prospect Lewis Corapi (6-1, 3 KOs).

Middleweight Eric Spicely (5-0, 2 KOs) of Providence faces Terrell Clark (2-1, 1 KO) of Worcester, Mass., and South Boston's James Murrin (2-1, 2 KOs) battles Baltimore's Robert Sullivan (4-3) in a featherweight bout. Flyweights Chris Cole (3-2) of Andover, Mass., and Dan Cormier (4-4, 1 KO) of East Providence, R.I., battle in a three-round bout and featherweight Rico Disciullo (3-0, 1 KO) of Peabody, Mass., faces newcomer Mak Kelleher of Selden.

Good evening, everybody. This is Mayor Toni Harp calling with an important update regarding New Haven’s response to this week’s snowstorm.

First, I want to thank residents for their patience and cooperation these past 36 hours. Widespread compliance with a parking ban and travel restrictions allowed easier access to city streets for faster snow clearance and removal.

A citywide parking ban remains in effect overnight tonight. At 6:00 a.m. Wednesday the downtown parking ban will be lifted, while the ban on emergency snow routes and the odd-numbered side of all other city streets remains in effect. Please call 203-946-8221 or the city’s Snow Line at 203-946-SNOW with any questions.

Those who parked in either the Granite Square parking garage or the Temple Street parking garage must remove their cars by 8:00 Wednesday morning or face regular parking rates at those places. Residents are reminded that neighborhood parking remains permissible on the even-numbered side of city streets.

All city departments, including all branches of the public library, will reopen for business as usual tomorrow. Trash pick-up will resume later this week on a two-day delayed schedule.

This week we worked together to minimize the inconvenience and disruptive potential of this storm even as we kept public safety a priority. Thank you very much for all your cooperation.

Have a good night.

Drone video shows the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp as it is today - 70 years after it was liberated by Soviet troops. The camp in Poland is now maintained as a World Heritage Site and is visited by thousands of tourists and survivors every year. Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the Germans during World War II. More than a million people - the vast majority of them Jews - died there between 1940, when it was built, and 1945, when it was liberated by the Soviet army.

Railway tracks into Auschwitz-Birkenau - Trains filled with victims from throughout occupied Europe arrived at the camp almost every day between 1942 and the summer of 1944.

Ruins of wooden huts at Birkenau - Birkenau (or Auschwitz II) was erected in 1941 solely as a death camp, the wooden huts are now in ruins with only brick fireplaces and chimneys remaining.

Entrance to Auschwitz I -The wrought-iron sign over the entrance bears the words Arbeit Macht Frei - "Work sets you free".

Auschwitz I - The brick-built buildings were the former cavalry barracks of the Polish Army.

Courtyard between blocks 10 and 11 at Auschwitz I - Block 11 was called "the Block of Death" by prisoners. Executions took place between Block 10 and Block 11 and posts in the yard were used to string up prisoners by their wrists.

Auschwitz Birkenau is now a museum run by the Polish Culture Ministry, and a Unesco world heritage

Holocaust survivors tell the world what happened in Auschwitz

Survivors of the Holocaust visited the former Nazi death camp Auschwitz on Monday (January 26), one day ahead of ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of its liberation.

Those gathered in front of the gate with the inscription "Work sets you free,"offering a false promise of freedom, are some of the last people left alive to tell their story.

At a ceremony attended by heads of state on Tuesday (January 27), they will be delivering the speeches, but today they remain bitter that their voice i…

11020628072?profile=originalNEW HAVEN CITYWIDE PARKING BAN ANNOUNCED

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp has announced a 42-hour citywide
parking ban to allow snow removal equipment better access to city
streets – the parking restrictions are intended to streamline the
city’s response to this week’s snowstorm.

The parking ban will be in place beginning at 6:00 p.m. today, and
extend through noon on Thursday.

“New Haven is well-prepared for a coordinated, comprehensive response
to this snowstorm and that response will be all-the-more effective with
cooperation from city residents,” Mayor Harp said. “We’re asking
those with extra driveway space to allow neighbors to park there and
we’re asking local businesses with parking lots to make those
available as well.”

“To the extent we work together we’ll minimize the inconvenience
and disruptive potential of this storm and maximize public safety,”
Mayor Harp added.

The parking ban includes downtown New Haven (the area encircled by
Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, State Street, Grove Street, and Howe
Street), posted snow emergency routes, and the odd-numbered side of all
other city streets.

Free alternative parking is available in New Haven Public Schools
parking lots, city park parking lots, the Granite Square parking garage,
and for a $3 per day fee, at the Temple Street parking garage. Residents
are also reminded the neighborhood parking remains permissible on the
even-numbered side of city streets.

All storm related inquires can be directed to the city’s Office of
Emergency Management at 203-946-8221 or the city’s Snow Line at
203-946-SNOW.

Jan 27 2015 ...A clipper system will evolve into a coastal storm bringing snow from the Ohio Valley to the northeastern states... ...Well above normal temperatures expected over the central U.S... ...Wet weather is in the forecast for the Desert Southwest... The amplified pattern across the nation will continue which features a broad upper trough extending over the eastern half of the U.S. Meanwhile, a rex block is expected across the West which indicates a ridge is bounded to the south by a closed upper low. The deep upper trough stretching from the Great Plains eastward to the Eastern Seaboard will allow a series of disturbances to dig through the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys and eventually into the Mid-Atlantic. The initial system which spread wintry precipitation to sections of the Northeast is departing into the Canadian Maritimes. While snow has ended across New England, gusty winds continue given the strength of the surface cyclone. In its wake, a very brief lull in the pattern is noted with the next system currently advancing through the Middle Mississippi Valley. This clipper system will initially be rather moisture deprived which is the typical nature of these systems. This should spread an area of 2 to 6 inches of snow to the Ohio Valley. As the upper trough amplifies across the lower Tennessee Valley on Sunday evening, a coastal low is forecast to develop which will significantly increase the moisture available to the storm. This will ultimately raise the snowfall totals across the Mid-Atlantic along with the southern half of New England. Currently, the WPC winter weather desk is expecting 4 to 8 inches over the Maryland Panhandle into southern Pennsylvania while a swath of 6 to 12 inches will be possible from New Jersey up to eastern Massachusetts. All amounts are through Tuesday morning with snow continuing to fall across the Upper Mid-Atlantic and New England afterward. In addition to the heavy snow prospects, a tightening pressure gradient will lead to gusty winds which may bring blizzard conditions to sections of the affected area. Over the Central U.S., expect well above normal temperatures to prevail across Northern Rockies along with the Great Plains region. This is in response to a persistent downslope flow which will significant warm the surface temperatures east of the higher terrain. The current forecast anomalies suggest readings of 20 to 30 degrees above normal which would translate to highs nearing 70 across the Central High Plains on Monday. Elsewhere in the nation, a secondary clipper system is expected to cross the Upper Great Lakes spreading light snowfall accumulations on Monday. Looking to the southwestern states, the earlier mentioned closed low will lift northward from the subtropical East Pacific. Enhanced moisture combined with strong vertical lift will spread a hefty batch of rainfall to the Desert Southwest on Monday and Tuesday. Widespread rainfall amounts of 0.25 to 0.50 inches are likely with heavier amounts in the local terrain. CES MMA WELTERWEIGHT champion Chuck O'Neil, bottom, of Bridgewater, Mass., seen here submitting Ricardo Funch in their 170-pound title fight in October, returns to the cage Friday, Jan. 30th, 2015 to defend his title against New Jersey veteran Manny Walo in the main event of "CES MMA XXVII" live from Twin River Casino on AXS TV. Next Friday's event is CES MMA's 2015 debut and the first of its year-long nationally-televised fight series with AXS TV.

O'Neil returns to the cage next Friday to defend title against red-hot Walo on AXS TV

11020623664?profile=originalWalo

COUNT DOWN !!

11020623898?profile=original

The Chuck O'Neilpreparing to enter the cage next Friday is a smarter, savvier version of the raw talent who first stepped foot inside the hexagon eight years ago.

"I'd just fight and say, 'Screw this guy. I'm going to punch him in the face,'" O'Neil said. "That was my logic behind fights."

Nearly a decade later, the Bourne, Mass., native is a student of the game, a technician who now watches film, studies tendencies and prepares in advance of each upcoming fight. The game plan these days is far more sophisticated than just cocking back and firing a right hand at a moving target, perhaps the main reason O'Neil has evolved from a fringe contender on the regional circuit to the reigning CES MMA welterweight champion.

"You'll see even more improvement from my last fight to this next fight," O'Neil promised.

The next opportunity for O'Neil (14-6, 4 KOs) comes Friday, Jan. 30th, 2015 in the main event of "CES MMA XXVII" when he defends his title in a five-round bout against Jersey City veteran Manny Walo (7-1-1, 1 KO) at Twin River Casino. The fight will air live on AXS TV, the first of five CES MMA events scheduled for network television in 2015.

It'll be difficult for O'Neil to top his win over Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) alum Ricardo Funch in October, a fight in which O'Neil submitted the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt via arm bar in the second round, but Walo might force his hand. The 27-year-old vet has won seven of his last eight fights and hasn't lost since dropping a three-round decision to Michael Wilcox in his pro debut.

"He's a very tough opponent," O'Neil said of Walo. "Coming off the win against Ricardo, I came back to [CES MMA matchmaker] Pat Sullivan and said, 'Look, I want a tough opponent.'

"That's what it's going to take to get back to a bigger show. Yeah, I've won three in a row, but I need to keep fighting tough opponents. They found one in Manny Walo. I expect him to come out guns blazing looking to rip my head off, take me down and smash me out on the ground.

"These are the kind of fights that bring out the best in me. I'm healthy and I'm ready to keep going. It's time to make this push and make something happen in this sport."

Tickets for "CES MMA XXVII" are on $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All bouts are subject to change.

The Walo-O'Neil title bout highlights a stacked main card featuring six nationally-televised bouts, including a five-round lightweight showdown between CES MMA's reigning 155-pound champion, Julian Lane (8-3-1, 1 KO) of Mansfield, Ohio and Somerville, Mass., challenger Lucas Cruz (7-2, 4 KOs). Lane is fresh off a nationally-televised win over Providence, R.I., lightweight Luis Felix, who also returns Jan. 30th on the main card in a three-round bout D'Juan Owens (11-8, 4 KOs) of Richmond, Va.

Also on the main card, Woonsocket, R.I., bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath (8-2, 4 KOs) faces Brian Kelleher (11-7, 5 KOs) of Seldon, N.Y., while Dedham, Mass., welterweight Brett Oteri (12-5, 1 KO) battles Ludlow, Mass., vet Jon Manley (8-2). The opening bout on AXS TV features East Providence, R.I., bantamweight Dinis Paiva (5-5, 3 KOs) battling Matt Doherty (3-1, 4 KOs) of Salem, Mass.

O'Neil's rise back to the top of the regional welterweight rankings comes more than a year half after his devastating knockout loss to Brazilian Gil de Freitas, a blow he considers nothing more than a minor detour on his road back to the UFC, where he starred in Season 13 of the promotion's The Ultimate Fighter reality television series.

"The big thing was I knew I made a lot of mistakes in that [loss to de Freitas]. It was time to work on my boxing issues," O'Neil said. "I worked on my footwork and movement and began cross-training at Tri-Force, working with boxing coach Dave Keefe. It's a huge difference."

With wins over Chris Woodall and Roger Carroll under his belt, O'Neil challenged Funch, a four-time UFC vet, and pulled out a victory he admits ranks "pretty high up there" on his list of career accomplishments.

"Ricardo is a beast," O'Neil said. "We came up around the same time, but when I came up I was just some scrubby guy throwing crappy punches and relying on last-ditch effort submissions. He was out there mauling people and I'm thinking to myself, 'Wow, this guy is awesome!' To be able to go out and perform as well as I did was awesome.

"I've gone from a submission grappler to a jiu-jitsu practitioner now. People look at me and say I'm this or I'm that. I'm an MMA fighter. I'm prepared to go wherever the fight takes me.

"I'm not just going out there to get a win. I'm looking to make a statement and that's what I'm going to do."

11020624670?profile=originalNEW HAVEN WINS 1ST PLACE AWARD FOR

CHILDHOOD OBESITY PREVENTION INITIATIVES

MAYOR HARP, AT U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS MEETING IN D.C., ACCCEPTS $120,000 GRANT ON BEHALF OF CITY

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp accepted, on behalf of the City of New Haven, a First Place award and corresponding $120,000 grant this week in recognition of the city’s ongoing childhood obesity prevention initiatives. New Haven received the top honor among ‘medium-sized’ cities at the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ (USCM) winter meeting in Washington, D.C.

Mayor Harp said the city was singled out for its Neighborhood Matters! (NMNH) programming, a partnership between the City of New Haven and Yale University that targets schoolchildren in the Fair Haven and Hill districts. Its objectives are consistent with USCM goals that encourage healthy weight through balanced diet choices and regular physical activity.

“I hope all New Haven residents feel as proud as I do that our city received this national recognition for the conscientious, innovative, and cost-effective efforts underway locally to address the serious health consequences of childhood obesity,” Mayor Harp said. “The teamwork and collaboration among social service providers and food and nutrition experts is raising awareness, getting positive results, and making a healthy difference in New Haven – and winning awards as a result.”

NMNH consists of two main components: Cooking Matters, a school and neighborhood-based nutrition education program that will provide nutrition education and training in healthy cooking to children and families; and a neighborhood-based, family oriented physical activities program that will promote increased physical activity and a more active lifestyle in general among the children and their families in the community.

The NMNH partnership ultimately envisions moving beyond the two targeted neighborhoods to a city-wide implementation of the program, and has set a rigorous goal of reducing childhood obesity by 20% citywide by 2018.

The USCM grant awards are divided into small, medium and large city categories, with first place and second place awards given in each category. The second place city among medium cities was Green Bay, WI. Jacksonville, FL and Seattle, WA, and Lima, OH and North Miami, FL were the first and second place finishers in the large and small city categories, respectively.

“I believe this (program) has advanced the science on childhood obesity prevention by identifying and supporting innovative programs that have the potential to be replicated in communities across the country,” said Tom Cochran, CEO and Executive Director of USCM.
