IMATTER

11020658666?profile=original“IMATTER” CITYWIDE YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROJECT FILLS THE CITY HALL ATRIUM WITH LOVE AS 10 NEW PORTRAITS OF NEW HAVEN YOUTH DEBUT! AT A 3PM RECEPTION, MAYOR HARP WILL SPEAK AND WYBC 94.3 WILL BROADCAST LIVE. “IMATTER” VOICES WILL ALSO LAUNCH WITH TWO AUDIO-READY ALUMINUM PANELS THAT INTERACT WITH SMARTPHONES.

New Haven, Connecticut (June 25, 2019) - The City of New Haven has partnered with the “IMatter” Project to showcase teens and young adults in a citywide public celebration of self-worth, compassion and community. Large-scale banners have been going up throughout the city at locations such as the Goffe Street Armory, Dollar Tree Store (Chapel Street), LoRicco Towers (Crown Street) and Dixwell Fire Station. Rob Goldman, founder and director of the “IMatter” Project said, “It's thrilling to see the City of New Haven coming together in support of our mission. Big-hearted people from government, education, the arts, the media, business, real estate development, parents, students, the list goes on, all stepping up help us give New Haven’s youth the voice they deserve.”

On Tuesday, June 25, at 3pm, the “IMatter” Project, the Youth Services Department (YSD) of the City of New Haven and 94.3 WYBC Radio welcome all to a kickoff reception as “IMatter” comes to the City Hall Atrium. Ten positive portraits of New Haven youth photographed by Goldman will fill the lobby with love. Led by Mayor Toni N. Harp, a brief presentation will showcase the youth, some of whom will be present. Mayor Harp said, “As mayor, I’m so proud New Haven is hosting this initiative.” Juan Castillo from “The Juan Castillo Morning Show” will be on hand, doing interviews that will broadcast live on 94.3 WYBC. An “IMatter” photo booth will be set up where guests can get their picture taken, create their word bubble and have it posted on the “IMatter” Facebook and Instagram pages. Spoken word artists will be on hand and pizza will be served. Free “IMatter”/94.3 WYBC bracelets will be given out, along with other swag.

"IMatter" Voices will be launched at this event as the first two audio-enabled, 59" by 78" aluminum panels that interact with smartphones are shown. Statements from "IMatter" youth can be heard by either scanning a QR code from each panel or using a phone's "search" feature to find the youth’s name. A prototype of an "IMatter" Tower will also be displayed. This is a preview of what New Haven will see in September when a nearly 10-foot-high illuminated tower will be permanently installed in the Dixwell Neighborhood with 36 photos of New Haven youth. Those photos are being shot this summer by "IMatter" founder and director, Rob Goldman with the youth selected by the tower’s sponsor, the Livable City Initiative (LCI). The audio derives by ongoing interviews, hosted by “IMatter” partner, 94.3 WYBC radio.

Tuesday’s effort continues the citywide youth empowerment effort, which started with the display of the initial 12 banners of the project, which were funded entirely by New Haven’s Youth Services Department. Jason Bartlett, Director of the Youth Services Department (YSD), said, “As a City, we will continually invest and value our youth. Part of that investment is recognizing the importance of self-esteem and a positive identity Juan Castillo, General Manager of WYBC radio, an “IMatter” partner said, “’IMatter’ brings us together under one banner.” “There is nothing more joyful and powerful than seeing our youth bear witness to their fullest expression,” said Erik Clemons, CEO of ConnCAT, another project supporter.

The “IMatter” Project is a multimedia youth empowerment program that celebrates the sanctity and self-worth of teens and young adults. The comprehensive public media campaign cultivates civic empowerment, uplifting and uniting citizens of all ages while instilling a sense of communal pride and promise. Founder and director Rob Goldman said, “We are giving New Haven youth a face and a voice.

The public art program features Goldman’s compelling photographic portraits accompanied by “IMatter” statements, written and spoken by each subject. Irresistible, young faces broadcast reflective messages of optimism that drive community engagement through larger-than-life banners, billboards, audio recordings, radio broadcasts and interactive exhibits. Captivating works are designed to provoke intergenerational discourse about critical youth issues that include anxiety, depression, substance abuse, mental illness, gang violence and suicide.

The aesthetic uplift of the “IMatter” campaign inspires people to imagine and build a healthy community while promoting empathy, belonging and hope. We bring together the forces and faces of communities with an enticing platform that invites and unites governmental, civic, educational, corporate and philanthropic forces that bring about positive change. As a result, economic development and social/emotional health are positively impacted as people of all ages connect and celebrate within and across cultures.

Monday June 24 at 9:30AM at New Haven City Hall, Mayor Toni Harp of New Haven will be joined by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, Mayor Curtis Leng of Hamden, Superintendent Carol Birks of New Haven, Superintendent Jody Goeler of Hamden, and Board of Education Member Joe Rodriguez at a press conference to officially kick off the Summer Meals Program in New Haven and Hamden.

Providing children with access to nutritious food beyond the school year and into the summer months has clear health, education, and economic benefits. Children obtain 50% of their calories from food eaten at school through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs and the benefits of these programs have been demonstrated. The Summer Meals Program aims to address that significant gap in nutrition. Lack of access to meals beyond the school year exacerbates summer learning loss (also known as “summer slide”), health issues like obesity, and further increases the opportunity gap. In fact, food insecurity is significantly predictive of poor physical and cognitive development in children. In 2018, nearly 195,000 meals were served during the 8-week period that Summer Meals Program operated in New Haven and Hamden. The vast majority of meal sites, nearly 70, and all of the most utilized locations, were in New Haven.

11020661465?profile=original

The New Haven Food Policy Council (NHFPC), a commission of the City of New Haven, has been partnering with the New Haven Public Schools Food Service Department, the Food System Policy Division of the City of New Haven, and End Hunger CT! to reach more New Haven kids through the Summer Meals Program since 2014. In that time, we saw significant increases in the program utilization, especially in neighborhood-based supper meals. The Summer Meals Program has always relied on outstanding local community partnerships to plan and promote the Summer Meals Program. These vital planning and outreach efforts are possible because of the United Way of Greater New Haven, Witnesses to Hunger, CT Food Bank, Community Action Agency of New Haven, Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, and CitySeed.

Monday, June 24 at 9:30AM at City Hall for the Summer Meals Mayoral Press Conference.

CITY OFFICIALS SEEK PUBLIC INPUT THURSDAY AS THEY WORK TOWARD ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION MASTER PLAN

GOAL IS TO IMPROVE CITY STREETS AND INTERSECTIONS

New Haven, CT – The city’s Department Thursday at which public input will he of Transportation, Traffic & Parking will host a community workshoplp create its first-ever Active Transportation Master Plan.

The goal of the event is to identify intersections and streets that need improvements for safety and walkability – members of the public will be asked to help make these determinations.

Areas identified will be included in the Master Plan. Six street improvement projects identified at this workshop will be rolled out across six neighborhoods in the summer and fall of 2019. Residents are encouraged to show up to make sure their neighborhoods are represented.

These improvement projects are a part of a larger plan to increase active transportation in New Haven. “Active transportation” means getting around in a way that is powered by human energy – walking and bicycling, which includes accessing public transportation. Those who live in communities that prioritize active transportation tend to be healthier because they’re more active in their daily routines and the air they breathe tends to be cleaner.

Members of the public are encouraged to participate in Thursday’s workshop:

“Safe Routes for All” Active Transportation Community Workshop

Thursday, June 20, 2019

5:30-7:30PM

Residents who attend the workshop will have the opportunity to ask questions about the Master Plan, make recommendations, identify initial street improvement projects, and share their vision for future transportation in New Haven. Dinner will be provided for those who attend. Free parking is available four blocks away in the lot at State and Wall Street (10 Wall Street – Park New Haven lot).

UNDEFEATED TRAMAINE WILLIAMS of New Haven puts his 17-0 record on the line against 17-win vet Neil John Tabanao of the Philippines in the co-feature of CES Boxing's fight card at Foxwoods Resort Casino on Saturday, June 29th, 2019.
MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (June 4th, 2019)  -- Former two-time world champion "Bad" Chad Dawson, boxing's preeminent light heavyweight for nearly a decade in the early 2000s, ends a two-year layoff Saturday, June 29th, 2019 at Foxwoods Resort Casino to headline a loaded pro-am show promoted by regional giant CES Boxing.

Born in South Carolina, but raised in New Haven, Conn., since the age of 6, Dawson (34-5, 19 KOs) joins fellow New Haven boxer Tramaine Williams (17-0, 6 KOs) for a special "Homecoming" as part of a stacked lineup featuring eight professional bouts preceded by a preliminary amateur card at the historic Fox Theater. Williams hasn't fought in his home state since 2015. For Dawson, June 29th is his first appearance in Connecticut since April of 2016.

The preliminary card begins at 5:30 p.m. ET, followed by the main card at 7. The latter streams live on Facebook via FIGHTNIGHT LIVE. Tickets for the event are priced at $47, $77 and $157 (VIP) and can be purchased online at  www.cesboxing.com  or  www.foxwoods.com , by phone at 401-724-2253 or 800-200-2882 or at the Fox Theater Box Office. All fights and fighters subject to change

"Our 'Homecoming Kings' will take center stage June 29th," said CES Boxing president and CEO Jimmy Burchfield Sr. "Foxwoods Resort Casino is the only place you want to be that night.

"This card has it all. Fight fans in Connecticut have waited a long time to see Chad Dawson back in the ring, and Tramaine Williams is one of the best-kept secrets in New England, a future world champion who has done nothing but win -- and win convincingly -- since he launched his career.

"Nowhere else in boxing will you find a fight card featuring both the stars of today and the champions of tomorrow. The amateurs you see on the preliminary portion of this card will one day be headlining at venues throughout the world. With so much talent assembled under one roof, June 29th will set a new standard for professional and amateur boxing in New England. You don't want to miss this!"

Fighting for the first time in more than two years, Dawson faces Charlotte, N.C., southpaw Quinton Rankin (15-5-2, 12 KOs) in an eight-round bout while Williams, nicknamed "The Mighty Midget," battles Filipino Neil John Tabanao (17-5, 11 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight showdown, a bout presented in association with Roc Nation Sports.

Dawson's resume in the light heavyweight division is unmatched, and his history with CES Boxing dates back to the beginning of his career, including his second pro fight when he shared the stage with Rhode Island icon Vinny Paz, who recorded his 48th victory that night. Two years later, the hard-hitting Dawson reached a major milestone of his own, capturing the WBC World Youth Middleweight Title at Foxwoods with a win over Dumont Welliver.

Dawson's rise to prominence continued with NABO and NABF titles in 2005 and 2006, respectively, before he reached the top of the mountain a year later by upending Tomasz Adamek for the WBC World Light Heavyweight Title. Dawson defended the belt three times over the next year and a half, including a win over two-time world champion Glen Johnson. Six months later, he dominated three-time champ Antonio Tarver in the first of their two championship bouts, winning and subsequently defending the IBO and IFO world titles. In 2009, he returned to Connecticut and beat Johnson a second time to capture the interim WBC title and then won the WBC light heavyweight crown a second time in 2012 with a majority-decision victory over the iconic Bernard Hopkins in Atlantic City.

Rankin steps up to face Dawson in the midst of a three-fight win streak dating back to November, highlighted by a fourth-round knockout win over Columbian challenger Neller Obregon in April. The 32-year-old southpaw handed light heavyweight prospect Aaron Casper his first career loss in December and also battled Russian prospect Medzhid BektemirovMike Gavronski and reigning NABA champion Charles Foster of New Haven.

Seventeen years since his professional debut, Dawson has come full circle as he reunites with the promoter who launched his career nearly two decades ago. CES Boxing's June 29th pro-am extravaganza is its 49th event at Foxwoods since the casino began hosting combat sports in 1992. Event No. 50 takes place in December as the second installment of CES Boxing's two-fight series in 2019 and will feature a celebration of some of the best fighters to compete on CES-promoted cards at Foxwoods over the past 27 years.

"I'm glad to be back where it all started and I'm happy to build stronger relationships with CES and collaborate on bigger projects in the future," Dawson said. "CES is where my professional career started, so I'm looking forward to working with them again and working my way to the top. Boxing is life for me and I'm grateful for this opportunity."

The well-traveled Williams makes his Foxwoods debut June 29th in just his second pro fight in his home state. Promoted by Roc Nation Sports, the 26-year-old southpaw has fought everywhere from El Paso to Long Beach, including stops in New Hampshire, Kansas and Pennsylvania.

Williams began his surge toward the top of the featherweight division in 2017, obliterating 30-win vets Christopher Martin and William Gonzalez via knockout in back-to-back bouts. Later that year, he dominated Mexican journeyman German Meraz, a veteran of 120 bouts, by unanimous decision, and then opened 2019 with victories over Jose AlfredoRodriguez and Ernesto Guerrero, who entered with 32 and 31 wins, respectively.

Tabanao may be the toughest test of Williams' career. The 25-year-old native of Mandaue, Philippines, boasts an impressive resume that includes a knockout win over Australian title-challenger Ibrahim Balla, plus a WBC youth title showdown with former world champion Isaac Dogboe in 2016.

"I can't wait to fight at home again," Williams said. "I'm especially excited to be fighting on the same card as Chad Dawson, who I came up the ranks with. It's going to be a great show so, Connecticut, be ready!"

" I'm extremely excited and pleased about Tramaine taking the next step of his amazing journey on June 29 in his home state of Connecticut at Foxwoods Resort Casino," said Dino Duva of Roc Nation Sports. "Tramaine is on a mission, and will not be stopped until he fights for, and wins the world championship! I'm also very happy to be collaborating on this event with my old friend, Jimmy Burchfield, and his CES Boxing team -- a sincere thank you to them. I look forward to doing many great things together with them in the future."

The June 29th undercard features New England fan-favorites, beginning with Manchester, Conn., junior middleweight Jose Rivera (7-4, 5 KOs) facing Miami's Luca Podda (7-3, 3 KOs) in a six-round bout, along with Bridgeport, Conn., lightweight Oscar Bonilla (5-3-2, 1 KO) battling Julio Perez (4-3) of Worcester, Mass. Super lightweight Wilson Mascarenhas (1-1) of New Bedford, Mass., makes his Foxwoods debut in a four-round bout against Jose Arzola (0-0) of Hartford, Conn., and female bantamweight Marisa Messer-Belenchia (0-0) of New Haven, an accomplished amateur who also competes in mixed martial arts, makes her professional boxing debut against Florida's Delaney Owen (0-2) in a four-round bout.

Undefeated featherweight Nathan Martinez (3-0, 1 KO) of New Britain and Bridgeport super featherweight Jacob Marrero (3-0, 2 KOs) will be featured in separate four-round bouts. The 20-year-old Marrero debuted with CES Boxing in October, stopping challenger Fierce Taylor at the 2:30-mark of the second round.

The amateur preliminary card is the third installment of the Jimmy Burchfield USA Boxing Amateur Classic. Ten bouts are scheduled, including the amateur debut of Lennox Estrada, the son of former U.S. Olympian and heavyweight contender Jason Estrada of Providence; plus William Guilmette of Coventry, R.I.; 2019 Southern New England Golden Gloves Champion David Ribeiro of Brockton, Mass.; and 2019 New England Golden Gloves Champion Mark Solis of New Haven.

New regimen, new approach fuel Boyington ahead of latest challeng
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 24th, 2019) -Bruce Boyington is all business. While traveling to sunny Redondo Beach, CA, would be a vacation for most, CES MMA's reigning featherweight world champion is there to sharpen his skills in preparation for his first title defense next Friday in Hartford, CT.

The Milford, ME native spent a week and a half training at Blackhouse MMA, home to UFC legends B.J. PennAnderson Silva and Lyoto Machida, among others. On Friday, May 31st, 2019, he fights for the first time since capturing the then vacant CES MMA title when he faces challengerDan Dubuque (8-2, 2 KOs) in a five-round bout, headlining CES MMA 56 at the Connecticut Convention Center live on UFC Fight Pass.

Tickets for the event start at $35.00 and are available for purchase online at www.cesmma.com or www.ctconventions.com or by phone at 401-724-2253. All fights and fighters subject to change

For Boyington (16-11, 7 KOs), there's a noticeable benefit to training with some of the sport's upper-echelon fighters. He first made the trip a year ago prior to his title bout against former UFC vet Sean Soriano, a fight in which he was a 4-to-1 underdog. Boyington pulled off the upset on AXS TV, submitting Soriano via rear-naked choke at CES 51

Now the pilgrimage to southern Los Angeles is a must for Boyington, whose experience rolling with the likes of Machida and UFC welterweight contender Kevin Lee is the equivalent of a slugger swinging a weighted bat in the on-deck circle. In addition to expanding his horizons by training out west, Boyington also switched camps a year ago and now works with Titan Athletics in Brewer, which he says has put him in "a whole new category as far as being a fighter goes."

"Nothing against Dan, but when you test yourself against fighters like that and then come back and fight a guy like Dan, it's beneficial to know you're not going against a guy who's as good as those guys," Boyington said. "Maybe he is that good, but he hasn't gone to the UFC and fought guys like that. Mentally, it does a lot for me."

Boyington, who turned 40 in May, uses whatever he can as motivation, whether it's being labeled an underdog by the odds-makers like he was against Soriano, or quips about his age, which seems him to annoy him the most.

A lifelong athlete who has always kept himself in impeccable shape, Boyington feels better than ever as he puts the finishing touches on his latest training camp. He started taekwondo at a young age and enlisted in the U.S. Marines out of high school, eventually teaching taekwondo to corpsmen in between deployments. In his four years of active duty, he spent time in Afghanistan, Greece, Albania and Macedonia and was stationed in Kosovo during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

Life in mixed martial arts has kept him equally well-traveled; in between bouts on the regional circuit, Boyington headlined a fight card in Russia and also faced Andre Harrison at Madison Square Garden four months later for World Series of Fighting. Both the military and MMA have had a profound impact on his life, teaching him discipline and routine and forcing him to adhere to a strict code of ethics he maintains both in and out of the cage. When he's not preparing for an upcoming fight, he runs his own school in nearby Brewer, appropriately named Boyington's Taekwondo Academy.

There's no doubt what keeps him motivated -- it's his love of competition and the burning desire to keep proving people wrong. The underdog mentality has served him well through the years. "I think there's a lot more pressure when you're not the underdog," he said. "I just don't like being counted out. I don't like people underestimating me. People talk about my age, as if that has anything to do with how I am as a fighter, and it fuels me to defy the odds."

Dubuque, a Waterbury, CT, native, will have the crowd on his side as he enters the title fight on a four fight win streak, including his most recent bout at CES 55. But Boyington is more confident than ever in his training and tutelage. In the past, he's had difficulty preparing for fights due to a lack of training partners, or with outside distractions, but his business trip out west helped clear his mind, which may end up being more important than anything else.

"Being out there allowed me to put all of my focus on my training," Boyington said. "When I come home, I'm in a good place, and I get to come out on fight night with an entire team behind me. All of those things play a big role. Rolling with guys who are all pushing me, knowing my body is conditioned, puts me in a good place mentally. It feels great. I'm focusing on all the right things."

CES 56 is available on UFC Fight Pass with Michael Parente handling play-by-play alongside color commentator and longtime UFC vet "Filthy" Tom Lawlor and Canadian MMA analyst Robin Black. Fights start at 6:30 p.m. ET with the live stream beginning at 8.

CES 56 also features the CES MMA debut of Springfield, Mass., lightweight Nick Newell (14-2, 2 KOs), who faces Texas' Antonio Castillo (10-10, 1 KO), plus the return of Oyster Bay, N.Y., native John Gotti III (3-0, 3 KOs) in a welterweight bout against David Espino (3-2, 2 KOs) of Quincy, Mass.
