NEW HAVEN - When Aaron Neville was growing up in the projects of New Orleans, like many a child of the 1950s and ’60s, he escaped into the world of doo-wop – up on the roof with The Drifters, shabop-sha-bopping with The Flamingos, running away with Del Shannon.
Saturday, the soul and R&B singer and his quintet officially open the International Festival of Arts & Ideas (June 15-29), with a free concert on the Green at 7:45 p.m., inviting New Haven into the doo-wop world he captures on his new album, “My True Story,” a collection of classic doo-wop songs with the Neville touch.
