1 September, 2015 – ARMED CROOK ARRESTED AFTER ROBBERY

At about 1:00 AM, Officer Jacob Cedeno was dispatched to an Elm Street apartment to speak with someone reporting he’d been robbed.

In all, there were three victims. The men told the Officer they’d stopped to look at a bureau left curbside near their apartment. As they were deciding whether or not to take it, they were confronted by a man who brandished a revolver. They said the gunman pointed it at them and ordered them to hand over their valuables and phones. The crook reportedly had each victim unlock their phones and provide him with their passwords.

One by one, they handed the demanded items over to the robber. He left in car described by one of the victims as possibly being a dark colored Toyota Corolla. Two men who were waiting for the robber at the car. They left with him and were last seen heading north on the Ella T. Grasso Boulevard.

The victims described the robber. He is a black man who stands about six feet tall – perhaps a bit shorter. He has an average build. He wore black clothing including cargo-shorts. He had on a “White Sox” logoed baseball cap.

An attempt at tracking one of the victim’s phones equipped with a locating app proved futile as the thief had turned it off. An hour or so later, however the phone was on and was sending a signal. It was near Morse Street in the Newhallville neighborhood. The victim sent Officer Cedeno a screenshot of the ping and Cops converged on the area. Hamden Officers joined in as the “ping” was near the town line and on the Farmington Canal Trail.

As Officer Cedeno arrived in the area, he spotted a dark colored Honda occupied by three men. It was parked on Morse Street. As he cruised by, two of the men got out. The Officer did to after radioing his location. As Officer Cedeno spoke with the two suspects, Officers Jose Luna and Christopher Landucci pulled up to the car and its remaining occupant. A “White Sox” baseball cap was on the dash. Upon further inspection, they spotted the stock of a gun sticking out from beneath the driver’s seat.

The men were all handcuffed and the Officers began searching the car. They recovered a .380 caliber model P380 Davis Industries handgun. It was loaded and chambered and stuffed in the rear pouch of the driver’s seat. The gun beneath the seat was a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver – also loaded. Cash was on the seat. They found a cap with fake dread-locks sewed into it (perhaps a disguise) and a black ski mask. They found a wallet and a bunch of phones. Three Apple I-Phones and an HTC Cricket were either in, beneath or near the car.

The victims positively identified Karis Westley (1-17-1993) as the armed robber. Westley, a convicted felon, was arrested and charged with first degree robbery with a firearm, conspiracy to commit first degree robbery with a firearm, weapon in a motor vehicle, second degree larceny, conspiracy to commit second degree larceny carrying a pistol without a permit and criminal possession of a firearm. His pals were arrested too. Rajoun Julious (1-25-1992), also a convicted felon, was charged with conspiracy to commit first degree robbery with a firearm, weapon in a motor vehicle, second degree larceny, conspiracy to commit second degree larceny carrying a pistol without a permit and criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell.  Robert Fairweather (6-30-1992) was charged with conspiracy to commit first degree robbery with a firearm, weapon in a motor vehicle, second degree larceny, conspiracy to commit second degree larceny and carrying a pistol without a permit.

The guns weren’t reported stolen. The car wasn’t registered and was impounded.

SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

hc-new-haven-shooting-20141207

31 August, 2015 – ROBERSON HOMICIDE CASE UPDATE

The State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection, Division of Scientific Services has reported to us that the human torso found on 30 July, 2015 at 301 George Street is most likely that of Mr. Ray Roberson – a homeless man from New Haven. The torso and earlier discovered arms and legs are all of the same victim.

31 August, 2015 – SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

At 1:20 AM, Officers were dispatched to Lombard Street and Ferry Street to investigate a reported shooting.

The victim, thirty-three year old Herlindo Hamenez Martinez, of New Haven, told Officers he and a friend were leaving Tora’s Restaurant (a bar at that corner) when they were confronted by two men. At least one was Hispanic and was armed with a handgun. The other is thought to be black. They marched the victims around the corner to Chatham Street where two other men joined in on the robbery. They were both black and one was also armed with a handgun. It is unclear as to whether the crooks made off with any of the victim’s valuables but the Hispanic man shot Mr. Martinez in the stomach. His friend took off while being fired at by the other armed man. He was not shot.

The shooting victim’s injury is not life threatening. The only available descriptions of the conspirators is that each stands between 5’09” and 6’00” tall. Detectives and Officers found no ballistic evidence at the scene.

28 August, 2015 – STABBING INVESTIGATIONS

An early evening argument turned into an attack at the Mobil Service Station at 284 Whalley Avenue.

At 7:20 PM, Officers were dispatched to 222 Sherman Avenue to investigate a reported assault. The victim, thirty-four year old Kenneth Bogan, of New Haven, told Investigators he was fueling up his ride at the gas station, when he was confronted by a man he claims to have seen in the past. He said the man struck him from behind and that the two fought. He said his assailant fled the area atop a scooter but two others continued assaulting him as he lay on the ground.

After one kicked him in the face, the two men fled in separate SUVs.

Mr. Bogan suffered a serious but not life-threatening injury to one of his eyes. He was unable to give many details to Detectives due to his treatment at the hospital. Detectives will follow up on the case when the victim is available. The assailants were not described.

SIXTY-ONE MINUTES LATER

At 8:21 PM, Patrol Officers were dispatched to a stabbing reported at a 10 Garden Street apartment.

Once there, they found the victim, twenty-five year old Natanea Watson, of New Haven. She said she was cut on her right forearm and that her cousin Jeter did it. Shakerra Jeter (6-1-1987), of that address, was standing there and told the Officers Watson was right… she stabbed her. Jeter was handcuffed and arrested.

When interviewed later on, Jeter told Detectives she was trying to get her cousin to leave. Jeter said the argument began because Watson was drunk and was saying rude things to folks as they passed by. They argued as they went upstairs to her apartment. Once Watson refused to leave, Jeter said she picked up a knife. She said Watson was flailing her arms about and that she was cut when she got too close. There was a young child in the apartment who wasn’t harmed.

Jeter was charged with assault in the second degree, risk of injury to a child and breach of peace. Police also arrested Watson – charging her with breach of peace. She was issued a summons to court.

Gray issues stern warning to challenger Sippio-Cook in advance of Sept. 18th UBF title bout

WORCESTER, Mass. (Aug. 27th, 2015) – Austin, Tex., junior middleweight Kenton Sippio-Cook thinks Khiary Gray should’ve done his homework before agreeing to fight him Friday, Sept. 18th, 2015 at Twin River Casino.

“Somebody in Khiary’s team either got lazy with their work in finding an opponent, or really just doesn’t care about Khiary,” Sippio-Cook said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Gray (8-0, 6 KOs), speaking publicly for the first time at Wednesday’s press conference at Rocky’s Sports Bar in his hometown of Worcester, Mass., insists this is no last-minute cram session as he prepares to lock horns with Sippio-Cook (6-2, 4 KOs) for the vacant Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) Northeast Junior Middleweight Title in the six-round co-feature of “Mayhem,” presented by CES Boxing.

“I don’t care what he says. He’s going to feel a left hook, body, or head. After that, he’s just going out,” Gray said. “I’m excited for it. I’ve been waiting for it.”

This will be Gray’s first six-round fight, whereas Sippio-Cook has boxed six full rounds three times already and recently went the distance with Wes Capper in a scheduled eight-round bout in May. While Gray has been incredibly in 2015, having already fought five times, none of those fights went past the first round as Gray knocked out each opponent, raising questions as to whether or not he’ll have the stamina to fight six full rounds, if it lasts that long.

Gray, however, insists it’s no issue, referencing his second pro fight last September in which he boxed four full rounds with the game Sergio Cabrera, a fight he won unanimously on the scorecards.

“I could’ve went six or eight rounds,” Gray said. “I’ve sparred 10, 13 rounds before. This is going to be no different.”

This fight also represents Gray’s toughest opponent to date. Though he’s coming off a pair of losses, the 24-year-old Sippio-Cook has stepped up the level of competition in recent fights; his last three opponents have a combined 22-3 record.

The showdown between Gray and Sippio-Cook is one of two title fights on the card, which also includes the 10-round main event between Rhode Islanders Rich Gingras (15-4-1, 9 KOs) of Lincoln, the reigning New England Light Heavyweight champion, and unbeaten challenger Angel Camacho Jr. (14-0, 4 KOs) of Providence.

Tickets for “Mayhem” are priced at $40.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and available for purchase online at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The undercard features several new faces, highlighted by Stoughton, Mass., junior welterweight Travis Demko (3-0, 1 KO), who makes his Rhode Island debut against Mohamed Allam (1-0) of Holyoke, Mass., followed by Worcester junior middleweight Andy Gonzalez (1-0, 1 KO), who battles 6-foot-4 southpaw Antonio Allen of Philadelphia in Allen’s debut. Both are four-round bouts.

New London, Conn., heavyweight and Peter Manfredo Sr. protégé Cassius Chaney (3-0, 2 KOs), a former two-time amateur national champion, and Bronx, N.Y., light heavyweight “Fly” Mike Marshall (1-0, 1 KO), also make their Rhode Island and Twin River debuts in separate four-round bouts.

Cranston, R.I., junior middleweight Jon Smith (2-0, 1 KO) ends a two-year layoff in a four-round bout against Rodrigo Almeida (1-2) of Woburn, Mass., and Framingham, Mass., junior welterweight Julio Perez (1-0) returns to face newcomer Pedro Martinez Jr. of Mooresville, N.C., in a four-round bout.

POLICE RAID NETS $22K & COCAINE FROM

A CONVICTED MURDERER’S HOUSE

New Haven |A morning raid by Officers from the New Haven Police Department’s Narcotics Enforcement Unit yielded greater results than originally thought.

With a warrant in hand, plain-clothed Officers hit the door at 147 Lamberton Street at about 10:30 AM. They were looking for drugs and any money garnered from the illegal operation.

Officer Vincent Ovchar authored the search and seizure warrant after he and colleagues investigated the drug house. The target of the warrant was Willie “Chill” Harris Jr (9-28-1971), of that address. His prior address was the Cheshire Correctional Facility where he served fourteen years after being convicted of murder in 1993.

Officer Ovchar had the expert assistance of Officers Jenna Davis, Mike Fumiatti and Tommy Glynn. The Unit boss, Sergeant Wayne Bullock had great praise for the Officers. “They were dedicated to this case. No one knew how much we’d get out of it but never the less, they investigated with vitality and enthusiasm”, he said.

The raid turned up $22,906.00 in cash and a hundred grams of powder and crack cocaine. The single-family home was outfitted with a camera surveillance system and a scanner dedicated to the NHPD frequency assigned for that area of the city.

After Harris’ arrest, detectives from the department’s Robbery & Burglary Unit got roped into the case. Narcotics Officers uncovered a small warehouse of potentially tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of suspect stolen electronics, power tools, beer and other bulk items. “It was as if he was operating his own Wal-Mart”, exclaimed Officer Tommy Glynn. “There were everything from packaged flat screen TVs to laundry detergent”, he said.

At this time, the house is being held while Detectives prepare the second warrant.

Harris was arrested and charged with possession of narcotics with the intent to sell within 1500’ of a school, possession of a controlled substance and operating a drug factory.

Chilemba Makes Crucial Decision:
Opts to Pursue WBC Mandatory Position

Totowa, NJ:          Isaac "Golden Boy" Chilemba (24-2-2, 10 KOs) was faced with a difficult decision regarding his future in the light heavyweight division. He received offers from two major sanctioning organizations to fight for mandatory positions. The first offer came from the IBF against Artur Beterbiev and the other from the WBC against Andrzej Fonfara. Although Fonfara may be unavailable to participate, Chilemba, the 28 year-old from Malawi, decided to stick with his plan to pursue WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Adonis Stevenson and forego the IBF offer.
Isaac has already earned the number one position in the WBC's light heavyweight rankings. He won his last four contests in a row, including defeating previously unbeaten Vasily "The Professor" Lepikhin via a lopsided unanimous decision victory to become the WBC's top ranked light heavyweight contender in the opening bout on the Kovalev-Pascal HBO World Championship Boxing telecast.
A grateful Chilemba said, "I'm very happy and glad that I finally got the chance that will lead to challenging Stevenson for his WBC belt. I'm more than ready for this opportunity. This is my second chance and I won't let it go by as I did against Bellew two years ago. It took me a long time to get back to my spot and this time I'll get my dream as I'm well prepared both mentally and physically. I thank God for this second chance because not a lot of people get that opportunity. I also thank my team, Jodi Solomon, my manager, who has stood by me through the ups and downs, Buddy McGirt, my trainer, for all the knowledge I am gaining from him and Main Events for taking me on and giving me the chance to prove myself."
His manager, Jodi Solomon, added, "I believe Isaac has worked hard and relentlessly to try and get this opportunity and because of that he rightly deserves it. Under the guidance of his unbelievably knowledgeable trainer, Buddy McGirt, Isaac has begun to evolve into an incredible fighter. I know Isaac will be prepared and ready for the challenge. Thanks to Main Events, it wouldn't have been possible without your support and efforts."

Chilemba's promoter, Kathy Duva of Main Events, believes Chilemba made the right decision, saying "I'm thrilled that Isaac is so in demand! He's worked very hard to get to this point in his career. After carefully considering our options with Isaac and Jodi, we've decided to follow our original plan and pursue the WBC mandatory position. Isaac became the WBC's number one ranked contender in March and has eagerly anticipated his opportunity to vie for the title."

REIGNING NEW ENGLAND Light Heavyweight champion Rich Gingras, left, of Lincoln, R.I., defends his title Friday, Sept. 18th, 2015 against undefeated Providence, R.I., native Angel Camacho Jr. in the 10-round main event of "Mayhem," presented by CES Boxing at Twin River Casino in Lincoln. The Gingras-Camacho Jr. showdown is one of two title fights on a stacked card featuring nine total bouts.
Champion Gingras, challenger Camacho Jr. battle for supremacy in throwback main event

LINCOLN, R.I. (Aug. 25th, 2015) -- Many of these self-proclaimed "Fight of the Year" candidates thrown around by promoters in the modern era pale in comparison to the legendary ring wars of yesteryear, inevitably leaving fans searching for more.

CES Boxing is changing the course with a throwback fight worthy of accolades in any generation.

The highly-anticipated Rich Gingras-Angel Camacho Jr.showdown, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18th, 2015 at Twin River Casino, is a classic power-finesse tug-of-war with the undefeated Camacho Jr. (14-0, 4 KOs) of Providence, R.I., putting his undefeated record on the line against the hard-hitting Gingras (15-4-1, 9 KOs) of nearby Lincoln, who defends his New England Light Heavyweight title for the second time in 15 months.

The Gingras-Camacho Jr. 10-round main event is one of two title bouts on a stacked fight card, appropriately titled, "Mayhem," with the second one scheduled in the six-round co-feature between undefeated Worcester, Mass., junior middleweightKhiary Gray (8-0, 6 KOs) and Kenton Sippio-Cook (6-2, 4 KOs) of Austin, Tex., who battle for the vacant Universal Boxing Federation (UBF) Northeast crown.

"Rich Gingras, Angel Camacho, they're fearless. Neither fighter is looking to pad his record or take the easy way out. This is what boxing needs, and that is what we will deliver on Sept. 18th," CES president Jimmy Burchfield Sr. said.

"We've been dying to bring this fight to our fans for a long time and we're excited to count down the days. Our co-feature might even steal the show. We've watched Khiary Gray mature right in front of our eyes over the past year and now he's stepping up to fight for a title against a dangerous puncher who's equally hungry to win."

Tickets for "Mayhem" are priced at $40.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and available for purchase online at www.cesboxing.com orwww.twinriver.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Gingras and Camacho Jr. were destined to cross paths ever since Gingras captured the then-vacant N.E. title with a knockout win over Jamie Velazquez in June of 2014, just a few shorts months before Camacho Jr. began his second comeback following a three-year layoff.

While Gingras pursued other ventures outside of boxing, Camacho Jr. quietly won a pair of tough fights against Paul Gonsalves and Chris Chatman to knock the rust off and put himself back in the conversation among New England's elite fighters.

Now they'll meet face-to-face for the N.E. title in a bout that could help shape the immediate future for whoever leaves the ring victorious. This will be Camacho's toughest test to date, just his third fight in the last seven years due to a pair of three-year layoffs, while the always-ready Gingras is no stranger to well-publicized regional wars, having already faced Peter Manfredo Jr.Joey McCreedy and Vladine Biosse at Twin River.

The undercard features several new faces, highlighted by Stoughton, Mass., junior welterweight Travis Demko (3-0, 1 KO), who makes his Rhode Island debut against Mohamed Allam (1-0) of Holyoke, Mass., followed by Worcester junior middleweight Andy Gonzalez (1-0, 1 KO), who battles 6-foot-4 southpaw Antonio Allen of Philadelphia in Allen's debut. Both are four-round bouts.

New London, Conn., heavyweight and Peter Manfredo Sr.protégé Cassius Chaney (3-0, 2 KOs), a former two-time amateur national champion, and Bronx, N.Y., light heavyweight "Fly" Mike Marshall (1-0, 1 KO), also make their Rhode Island and Twin River debuts in separate four-round bouts.

Cranston, R.I., junior middleweight Jon Smith (2-0, 1 KO) ends a two-year layoff in a four-round bout against Rodrigo Almeida(1-2) of Woburn, Mass., and Framingham, Mass., junior welterweight Julio Perez (1-0) returns to face newcomer Pedro Martinez Jr. of Mooresville, N.C., in a four-round bout.

She said she felt pain in her back and went to the hospital.

A witness said she was on the porch with the two victims when she heard the shots. Others said there were as many as fifteen people on the porch when gunfire was heard. Some reported the group was all female but that men had been there earlier.

New Haven – City officials today announced a planned two-week closure of the Grand Avenue Bridge beginning Monday, August 17th. The closure is to allow for preventative maintenance and routine repairs.

The scheduled work will consist of replacing linkages and mechanical components related to the wedge-type locking system that fixes the bridge into place, allowing for the safe crossing of vehicular traffic. City officials say these components must be replaced periodically to prevent failure, which would then require a much longer closure and resulting inconvenience.

The Grand Avenue Bridge will remain open to pedestrian traffic throughout the planned repairs, scheduled to be completed by Friday, August 28th.

The city’s Department of Transportation, Traffic, and Parking is working to coordinate traffic signals along alternate routes (map attached) and the New Haven Police Department is planning to have a uniform presence in the area to help alleviate any traffic congestion that may develop.

8 August, 2015 – THE NHPD RECOGNIZES HERO OFFICER

The last time fifty-six year old Albert Sanford was seen was on Tuesday, July 14th. He wouldn’t be reported missing until Friday despite having missed a dialysis appointment on Monday.

At 6:55 PM, Officer Christian Bruckhart was called to the Valley Street home of the missing man by his eighty-seven year old mother, Gloria Washington and his ex-wife, Linda Kendall. They’d filed a missing person report a few hours earlier but had new information for Police.

The women told the Officer they’d spotted his car parked at the upper Whalley Avenue Burger King – a clue that would lead Officer Bruckhart on a mission to find the missing gentleman.

Officer Bruckhart spoke with the manager of the restaurant in hopes of finding out more. She said she remembered seeing Mr. Sanford on Tuesday at about 2:00 PM. She said he left the restaurant on foot because he claimed he’d lost his car keys. He told her he had a spare key at home and was setting off to retrieve it. She said she saw him heading east on Whalley Avenue and “looked sick”.

Officer Michael Valente and Patrick Bengston joined Officer Bruckhart and the three set off to search for the missing man. They headed out on foot from East Ramsdell Street to the Valley Street Townhouses. They searched the wooded area on either side of Emerson Street and from there toward Blake Street.

Night fell and the steep embankments made further searching difficult. A stream that runs the length of the gully in the middle of the wooded area made searching in the dark quite dangerous. Officer Bruckhart contacted area hospitals and was told they would inform him should Mr. Sanford show up. Officer Bruckhart called the dialysis center, but there was no answer. They’d closed for the day.

Officer Bruckhart issued a Silver Alert and should have been finishing his reports before heading in at the end of his shift. He should have been but couldn’t. He knew the missing man was most likely in the woods and knew he’d been without life preserving medical treatments for days.

Officer Bruckhart started searching again.

At 10:30 PM, Officer Bruckhart found Albert Sanford in a culvert about fifty yards into a wooded area near Dayton Street across from the CVS Drugstore. Thankfully, he was alive and although disoriented, he was physically well. He said he’d been trapped there since Tuesday. Officer Bruckhart summoned the expert assistance of a squad from the NHFD to pull him from the culvert.

Mr. Sanford was taken by ambulance to the hospital for an evaluation. The Silver Alert was cancelled.

Officer Bruckhart drove to the hospital where he spoke a bit more with Mr. Sanford. Now comfortable in a hospital gown and on a soft gurney, Sanford told Officer Bruckhart he had no recollection of being at the Burger King but remembered entering the woods. He said he’d been cutting through there for “eons”, but that the trail was so covered by overgrown foliage, he’d gotten lost. He said as much as he tried, he couldn’t find his way back to the road.

The relieved Officer’s last words in his police report; “I advised him not to use the trails in the woods anymore”.

Officer Christian Bruckhart spent the first five years of his policing career serving the town of Wallingford, CT.

He was hired by New Haven on March 31, 2014. He has recently been assigned to the department’s narcotics Enforcement Unit.

8 August, 2015 – ARMED WOULD-BE ROBBER ARRESTED AFTER CHASE

At 1:14 AM, a twenty-six year old man (who appears and identifies himself as a woman) hailed Officer Hugo Villacres Jr. as he drove down Grand Avenue near Ferry Street. He told him a man with a gun tried robbing him of his cellular telephone but he got away. The man told the Officer that he’d been approached by a heavy-set black man who said to him, “How much do you charge”? He said he was waiting for a friend, at which point the man tried taking his cell phone which was partially tucked into his shirt.

She described the would-be robber to the Officer who in turn broadcast it to colleagues in the area. Officer Jason Santiago was patrolling nearby and spotted a suspect. The suspect spotted him and took off running. The Officer ran after him. The suspect threw down a handgun. The Officer tackled the suspect. The gun was recovered. It was in fact a BB gun.

The victim positively identified Charles Capers (picture attached) (4-24-1986), of Chelsea Street in Stratford, CT, as his attacker.

He was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to commit robbery in the third degree, criminal attempt to commit larceny in the second degree, possession of a facsimile firearm and interfering with Police.

Note: An earlier unrelated report of a minor assault involving Caspers is being investigated. He is accused by someone else, about an hour earlier, of slapping them and that he was armed with “some type of gun” when the incident happened.

8 August, 2015 – COUPLE ARRESTED IN DOMESTIC ASSAULT

At 8:50 AM, Officers were dispatched to 181 Winthrop Avenue after a couple’s heated argument turned violent.

Kenneth Johnson (4-4-1992), of Butler Street in New Haven, and Jamilah Jackson (4-9-1989), of Winthrop Avenue in New Haven, are boyfriend and girlfriend. Jackson told Officer Paul Cavalier that the two started arguing over her presumption Johnson was involved with another woman. The dispute reportedly escalated when, according to Jackson, she was punched and choked by Johnson. She said she armed herself with a kitchen knife and drove it into Johnson’s left leg. She gave the Officer the knife.

Johnson (picture attached) reported it was he that was the victim – that Jackson (picture attached) started the argument over the alleged other woman and that it was she that escalated the argument to violence.

Jackson was treated at the scene by EMTs for injuries to her lips and hands. Johnson was taken by ambulance to Yale – New Haven Hospital to be treated for his leg wound. It is not life-threatening.

Both combatants were arrested. Johnson was charged with assault in the second degree, breach of peace in the second degree and strangulation in the third degree. Jackson was charged with assault in the first degree and breach of peace.

9 August, 2015 – SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

At 12:42 AM, Officers were summoned to the Emergency Department at Yale – New Haven Hospital’s St. Raphael’s campus after a man arrived seeking treatment for a gunshot wound.

The victim, thirty year old Lemar McCullough told Officers he’d walked from his Lexington Avenue home to his girlfriend’s house in Hamden and then to another acquaintance’s home on George Street when along the way he was confronted by a black man who said, “Don’t move” and shot him in his leg.

McCullough said he walked to the hospital. He said the man who shot him stood under six feet tall and was heavy-set.

Officers searched the area. No evidence of the shooting was found – ballistic or otherwise. No reports of gunfire were phoned in and no one in the area reported hearing the shot. There were no ShotSpotter activations.

9 August, 2015 – SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

At 12:45 AM, a woman entered the Woodward Avenue Police Sub-Station and reported a fight and gunfire occurring at that moment at the nearby Fireside Bar, located at 810 Woodward Avenue.

Officers arrived quickly and learned a fight had erupted inside. They reported that staff members pushed the fighters outside and did not phone Police. Moments later, gunfire erupted.

At 2:17 AM, twenty-four year old Kevin Crouch, of Shelton Street in Bridgeport, CT, walked into the Emergency Department at Yale – New Haven Hospital. Hospital staff phoned Police and Detectives responded. The victim said he was at the Fireside Bar when he heard gunshots. He said that as he ran with the crowd, he was shot in the ankle. He drove himself to the hospital. His wound is minor – no more than a graze. He said he didn’t see who’d shot him.

9 August, 2015 – ARMED TEENAGER ARRESTED

At 6:16 PM, Officers responding to a suspicious person complaint encountered three young men lurking about the Advanced Auto Parts store on Rout 80 at Eastern Street. The three young men spotted the Officers. One took off running. An Officer took off after him and caught him a short distance away. The teen fought with the Officer. During his attempt to get away, he grabbed a gun and threw it away.

The teen was arrested and the gun was recovered. It was a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun. The gun was reported stolen in South Carolina.

The teen was charged with several gun charges.

Note: We are prohibited from releasing the identity of juvenile perpetrators or victims.

9 August, 2015 – GUNFIRE INVESTIGATION

At 10:00 PM, Officers were called to the area of 150 Fairmont Avenue after a resident reported hearing three gunshots. She told the Officers she’d first heard a single shot and then seen two men, clad in dark clothing fire two more shots toward a house.

A nearby house was struck once. The projectile did not appear to fully penetrate the exterior wall and no one was reported to have been injured. Police collected the evidence and photographed the scene. No suspects have been identified.

9 August, 2015 – GUNFIRE INVESTIGATION

At 11:20 PM, Officers were dispatched to Roosevelt’s Bar on State Street at Bradley Street after caller to 911 reported gunfire.

Arriving Officers encountered a large crowd. They were patrons at the bar’s “White Party” (a themed party at which patrons are dressed in all white).

It took officers some time to disperse the crowds and search for evidence. None were very cooperative when questioned about the gunfire. No evidence could be found. Witnesses did report gunfire.

A later report of a person shot at Popeye’s Fried Chicken Restaurant on Whalley Avenue seems to be related.

Note: On May 31, 2015, five people were shot in a single incident at a “White Party” held on the second floor of a downtown New Haven tattoo parlor. Police do not suggest any connection but caution the public that such themed parties do not have a good track record.

10 August, 2015 – SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

Just minutes past midnight, Officers responded to the Popeye’s Fried Chicken Restaurant at Whalley Avenue and Dwight Street after several callers reported gunfire and a person shot.

Arriving Officers found the victim, eighteen year old Jahsean Warren, of Front Street in West Haven. Warren gave Officers a generic description of the black man he said shot him. 5’07”, wearing a black tank-top, shorts and no shoes.

The victim wasn’t cooperative. Officers found evidence of the gunfire at Popeye’s and in nearby on Dwight Street.

Witnesses described a large private “White Party” that broke up after gunfire erupted at Roosevelt’s Restaurant on State Street at Bradley Street just minutes earlier. The witnesses claimed the dispute from the Roosevelt’s incident moved to Popeye’s, where things erupted again..
