NEW HAVEN CITY HALL PRESS EVENT TOMORROW

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp will welcome special guests from around the state to City Hall Thursday afternoon for a joint announcement about a this year’s ‘ Connecticut Big 3 ballout’ three-on-three basketball tournament.

Tomorrow’s joint announcement will be at 1:30 p.m. on the steps of New Haven City Hall: 165 Church Street in New Haven. Members of the press corps are encouraged to cover this event.

Three-person basketball teams from Hartford, Bridgeport, and Waterbury will travel and compete against New Haven teams; New Haven will host the tournament this weekend, August 4 – 5. New Haven’s Department of Youth Services is organizing the event, meant to foster friendly, spirited competition among young people from all four cities.

The tournament is one more part of a strategy to help keep young people engaged and productive during the summer season. Complementing the ‘’Connecticut Big 3 ballout tournament will be a festival of food, fun, and music on the New Haven Green on both Saturday and Sunday.

NEW HAVEN DETECTIVES EN ROUTE TO VIRGINIA REGARDING TREMAINE POOLE MANHUNT

New Haven| Detectives from the New Haven Police Major Crimes Division have left for Suffex County, Virginia this morning.

Virginia State Police are investigating a shooting and pursuit that occurred in Sussex County Wednesday morning (Aug. 1, 2018). New Haven Police have been informed that the person shot by Virginia State Police MAY BE New Haven murder suspect Tremaine Marquese Poole (7-5-1976). Poole is wanted by the NHPD for the first degree shooting assault of his wife on May 7th on Henry Street in New Haven. Poole is also the suspect in the murder of a twenty-eight year old New Haven woman. The victim’s two young children, ages six and eleven were in the car with her when she was murdered.

According to Sergeant Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police, the incident began at approximately 8:18 AM today (Wednesday, 1 August, 2018), when a stolen vehicle traveling north on Interstate 95 refused to stop for a Virginia State Trooper. A pursuit was initiated. During the course of the pursuit, shots were fired from the pursued vehicle. The pursued vehicle continued north on I-95 and took Exit 24. The pursuit ended near Loco School and Bell roads in Sussex County. The driver of the suspect vehicle was apprehended

New Haven/CT – From Tuesday, August 7 through Thursday, August 9, the City of New Haven and Microsoft will co-host the fourth annual, three-day Microsoft Digi Camp, to be held inside the city’s Hall of Records at 200 Orange Street.

The camp will expose young people to many innovative computer experiences such as Hololens (semi-Virtual reality) and Ohbot. New Haven’s partnership with Microsoft, and this year’s Digi Camp, advance Mayor Harp’s vision – and the work of her administration – toward digital inclusion, closing the computer science gap, and promoting the value of STEM careers among young people in the city.

It’s been reported that fewer than 40% of public schools in the U.S. teach computer science or programming skills, yet there are currently 500,000 high-paying tech jobs available for people with this skillset around the country.

Enrollment for this year’s Microsoft Digi Camp is open to students in grades 6 – 11. Enrollment is free but capped at 75. The camp will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.; breakfast and lunch will be provided to those accepted.

MAN CARJACKED WHILE HIS PIZZA IS BEING STOLEN

Just after midnight, a courier for a local pizza joint had driven to the double-digit block of Ford Street with a delivery.

Officers Jakub Baliga took the robbery call. The bruised thirty-eight year old deliveryman told Baliga he spotted two women who he suspected the pizza was for. He also noticed three young men running toward him. He had an uneasy feeling and asked the women to take their pizza.

The women grabbed the food, stiffed him on the purchase and walked off. At the same time, one of the three men had jumped behind the wheel of his running, eleven year old Hyundai Sonata. Another man got in the back seat. The victim said he tried getting the men out of his car, when the third pushed something to the back of his neck. He turned to see that it was a black semi-automatic pistol. The man kept the gun leveled toward the victim until he was in the car. The three crooks sped off.

The victim refocused his attention to the two women – now down the block with the pizza. He said he caught up with them and struggled to detain one. He said he’d no sooner wrapped his arms around one of the thieves, when his car pulled up. The three men got out and began beating him up. The girls joined in  - all five punching him as he shouted for help. His five assailants got into his car and sped off, turning south onto Dixwell Avenue.

Though bruised, the victim declined treatment.

The victim’s phone, which was in the car, was traced to Harding Place. Cops recovered it there and sent it to be processed for forensic evidence. Stolen from the courier was a couple hundred in cash, a $1,000 iPhone X and his wallet containing credit cards and his ID.

The five perps are wanted for first degree robbery, second degree larceny, third degree assault and second degree breach of peace. Add carrying a dangerous weapon and reckless endangerment for the guy with the gun.

Perpetrator one is a black female, 13-16 years of age, short afro-style haircut, thin build, clad in a white sleeveless shirt and dark pants. Perpetrator two is a black female, 13-16 years of age, short, thin build, dark hair, grey shirt and shorts.
Perpetrator three is a black male, 13-16 years of age, short, short dark hair, thin build, white sleeveless shirt, and black shorts. Perpetrator four is a black male, 13-16 years of age, tall, thick build, clad in a white shirt and dark colored shorts, in possession of a black handgun. Perpetrator five is a black male, 13-16 years of age, short, thin build, clad in a yellow shirt and dark pants.

Hours later, the victim and a friend got a hit on his stolen phone. They tracked it to a back yard on Harding Place, where they recovered it. It was undamaged. Officer Jason Jemiola canvased the area and later on found the victim’s wallet, minus his bank card.

The crooks remain at large.  

MAYOR HARP, OFFICIALS, COMMUNITY LEADERS TO FORMALLY OPEN CITY’S NEW, QUIET, INDOOR FIRING RANGE FRIDAY MORNING

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp will be joined tomorrow morning by Chief of Police Anthony Campbell, other city leaders, state officials, and community activists at the formal opening of the city’s new, indoor, police department firing range and training center.

• Tomorrow’s event is scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m. at 170 Wintergreen Avenue, in New Haven, the site of the old army reserve center. 

Tomorrow’s groundbreaking signals the culmination of a years-long process. City Engineer Giovanni Zinn said the just-completed, 19-months construction phase followed years of meetings and planning with neighborhood groups, police department officials, and design and construction experts.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a death investigation in the 1500 block of Clanton Road in the Westover Division.  The call for service came in at 1:06 a.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2018. 

Westover  Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a male with a gunshot wound.  He was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.  His identity will be released pending family notification.

Preliminary information indicates that the victim and suspect were in the home and are known to one another.  The suspect remained on scene and has been transported to police headquarters to be interviewed by Homicide Detectives

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services and Operations Command responded to the scene. 

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

Case Update:  Sunday, July 15, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit have charged Jermarion David Pernell Worthy, DOB: 06/17/2001, with the murder of Jamie Bright, DOB: 01/04/2000.  His family has been notified of his death.

Following the interview at CMPD headquarters, Homicide Detectives charged Worthy with Murder and subsequently transferred him to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.  

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

CITY TO HOST ‘PEACEBUILDERS’ EVENT TODAY: CHRISTIANS, JEWS, MUSLIMS TO PAINT BILLBOARD TOUTING ACCEPTANCE, WELCOMING REFUGEES

New Haven — The city will host more than 30 teenagers from Israel, Palestine and the U.S. today when they come together to celebrate their mutual respect and tolerance by painting a 48ft billboard sign to hang on I-95 welcoming refugees to the U.S. The group will be joined by Andy Wolf, the Director of Arts and Culture for the City of New Haven, and members of local churches, synagogues and mosques.

The teens are participants in the Jerusalem Peacebuilders’ residential peace program, an initiative that brings together visiting Israeli, Palestinian, and American youth ages 15-16 for nine days to study their own faith traditions, explore each other’s diverse backgrounds, and develop peacebuilding skills that will help in the long-term resolution of conflict in their homeland. While in New Haven, the group will be volunteering at Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services (IRIS), the leading refugee resettlement agency.

The sign they will be painting was designed by artist Russell Rainbolt and inspired by a photo from the NY Times’ 2016 Pulitzer Prize winning body of work illustrating the migrant and refugee experience. The original photo, taken by NYT photographer, Tyler Hicks, captured a young Turkish boy arriving on the Greek island of Lesbos in October 2015.

MANHUNT EXPANDS – REWARD RISES TO $30,000

WHAT: To provide information on the nation-wide manhunt for alleged murderer Tramaine Marquese Poole (7-5-1976). The reward for information leading to Pool’s capture and conviction has risen to a combined $30,000.

Tramaine Marquese Poole is suspected in the 7 May, 2018 shooting assault of his thirty-six year old wife and the 31 May, 2018 shooting death of a twenty-eight year old mother of two. Her murder was perpetrated with the victim’s two young children, ages six and eleven, present.

The $5K reward is being offered by The U.S. Marshals’ Violent Fugitive Task Force to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of Poole.

States Attorney Pat Griffin has asked, on behalf of the New Haven Police Department, for Governor Malloy to approve a $25,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of Poole. That request was granted, bringing the total reward offering to $30,000.

3 July, 2018 – SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

At 11:32 AM, Officers were sent to reported gunfire in the area of Goffe and Carmel Streets. Dispatchers relayed information that there was a victim of a shooting on Carmel Street near Percival Street. Soon after locating the victim, Hospital staff at the St. Raphaels’ campus of Yale New Haven Hospital, notified police there was a walk-in shooting victim at the hospital seeking treatment. Both victims were shot during the same incident.

The first victim is a twenty-eight year old man from New Haven, who was wounded in the thigh. The second is a twenty-one year old man from New Haven, who was wounded in the arm and leg. Neither have suffered life-threatening wounds and are in stable condition.

Detectives from the department’s Major Crimes Unit  and Bureau of Identification are investigating the double shooting.

24 June, 2018 – HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

At 11:34 PM, Officers were dispatched to reported gunfire at 165 Maple Street. The call was changed to a person shot as they were en route. The victim, twenty-one year old Robert Faulk-Dill, of New Haven, had been shot multiple times in the head, back and groin. He was on the front porch when he was gunned down. He was rushed to the hospital, where, an hour and a half later, he was pronounced deceased.

Some residents reported hearing gunfire, but due to a power-outage, the city’s ShotSpotter® system wasn’t reporting and the area was dark.

27 June, 2018 – ALLEGED MASTURBATOR ARRESTED

At 3:05 PM, Officers were dispatched to the summit of East Rock Park regarding a report of an Hispanic man publicly masturbating. There have been other such sightings of the self-pleasurer in the area. Officers have been searching trails throughout the park for him.  

The twenty-four year old victim told the officers he’d spotted the man hiding in a bush. He said he had a clear view of the perp’s activity and decided to continue walking until he was far enough away to phone police. Officers located the suspect, Larry A Rice (6-22-1975), of Highland Street in West Haven, CT in a lower area of the park. He was identified by the victim and charged with public indecency and risk of injury of a child (Children were present in the area).

27 June, 2018 – COPS SEARCH FOR SLASHER – ALL THREE VICTIMS UNCOOPERATIVE

At 4:49 PM, Officers were dispatched to the Hospital to speak with a stabbing victim. Andrew Levern Blanding (10-23-1971), of Hemlock Street in West Haven, had suffered severe cuts to his scalp and neck. Once able to talk, he chose not to. Couldn’t remember where he was or how he ended up assaulted. He’s expected to pull through.

The officers started researching other calls that could be related. They found one outside Lou’s Lodge on Blatchley Avenue at Clay Street. An argument and fight involving three people including the victim. When detectives went to Blatchley Avenue and Clay Street, there were two other victims – each with hand lacerations.

The story is coming together but detectives haven’t reached their conclusion yet.

28 June, 2018 – HOME DAMAGED BY GUNFIRE

At 4:54 AM, Officers headed to a gunfire complaint in the area of Clover Place and Truman Street. ShotSpotter®reported four shots. Then, a Clover Street resident called the cops to report all four hit his house.

The homeowner said he’d been awoken by the gunfire and it was all captured on video. Sure enough, investigators saw the tape. In it one can see a dark colored small sedan driving slowly westbound on Truman. Its occupant fired the shots. Police are investigating.

29 June, 2018 – FATAL CRASH INVESTIGATION

At 5:34 PM , Officer Steven Teague responded to a serious crash at Whalley and Elsworth Avenues. A car had collided with a motorcyclist. The rider was badly injured and was being attended to by Firefighter/ EMTs.

Bobby Sunshine Pinkston, thirty-seven, of West Haven, CT, was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment. Doctors were unable to save the critically injured man.

Members of the department’s Crash Reconstruction Team were dispatched and are investigating. Digital footage from a passing motorist’s vehicle’s forward and rear focused dash cameras show the motorcycle traveling east on Whalley. The involved car, a Nissan Maxima is seen turning left (south) onto Whalley from Elsworth. The impact itself is obscured by a stopped vehicle. The Nissan operator doesn’t stop and drives off after the crash. He stops on Argonne Street, where he’s confronted by a man who indicates he’s aware of the driver’s involvement in the crash. When the witness pulls out his phone to call police, the driver takes off running into a nearby apartment building.

The fleeing driver was described as a Latino man in his twenties, wearing an orange shirt and sporting a goatee. Two men on the porch of the apartment building told the cops they’d seen him get out of the Nissan and run inside. One said he asked the man if he was alright and offered to phone 911 for him. He said the man said " I`m okay, I need to call my wife, I hit a bike, I hit a bike."

Moments later, Officer John Brangi stopped the suspect after witnesses pointed him out. An angry crowd gathered and the driver, Luis Lala (11-3-1990), of Ellsworth avenue in New Haven, was taken into custody.

Lala was arrested and charged with evading responsibility involving the death of a person, negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without a license, illegal operation under the influence of alcohol or drugs and making an improper turn.

30 June, 2018 – TRIPLE SHOOTING INVESTIGATION(UPDATED ON 2 July, 2018)

At 11:20 PM , Officers responded to the area of Wayfarer Street and Wilmot Road to investigate a reported shooting. Two women had suffered gunshot wounds.

The Winslow Augustine Field on Wilmot Road was the location of a cookout drawing may people. Detectives and uniformed officers headed to the area. As some of the party-goers left, gunfire rang out. Officers just blocks away, heard the shots and rushed to the scene.

Tulani Nettles, nineteen, of Hamden, CT suffered wounds to her right shoulder. Whitney Robinson, nineteen, of New Haven was shot in her abdomen. Neither women were critically wounded and were taken to area hospitals for treatment and were listed in stable condition. Nettles told detectives she’d attended the party.

Soon after, Andrew Sanator Fowlin (4-1-1991), of New Haven, walked into the hospital. He’d suffered a bullet graze wound to his face and sought treatment. Fowlin told detectives he’d attended the party.

1 July, 2018 – BRAWL BROKEN UP

At 1:22 AM , Police were called toShotSpotter® reported gunfire on the double-digit block of Truman Street. As Sergeant Abbate arrived, he heard two “pops” and confronted a brawl in progress involving dozens of people. His commands to disperse were heeded by some. Abbate saw someone on the ground.

Officer Raul Perierra arrived after the sergeant’s pepper-spray was deployed. Perierra disappeared from Abbate’s view as the two struggled to pull apart the combatants. Other officers arrived and got the group separated.

The guy on the ground hadn’t been shot. The pops had been fireworks – including those that set off theShotSpotter® system. The brawl involved adults attending a “children’s party” that had extended past one o’clock in the morning.

1 July, 2018 – SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

At 2:14 AM , Officers headed to Bouchet Lane. A caller reported her sister had been shot in the head and was being driven to the hospital.

Investigators interviewed the driver of the car that brought the twenty-four year old victim in. He’d parked a distance from the hospital and initially refused to cooperate. Eventually, police were told he and the victim were in his BMW – parked on Bouchet Lane, when someone shot the victim through the car’s windshield.

The cops took the car once they found it parked nearby.

The victim, who’s injuries aren’t life-threatening, said she didn’t see the shooter. Detectives are investigating several leads.

1 July, 2018 – SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

At 2:16 AM , Officers were posted at the Yale New Haven Hospital Emergency Room entrance due to a large crowd that had gathered.

Unrelated to that, Raen Garian Sessions (4-10-1991), of New Haven, walked past and asked to speak with the triage nurse. He said he’d been shot. He refused to cooperate with investigators. His thigh wound isn’t life-threatening.

Although detectives are on the case, no crime scene was located

MAYOR HARP, NHBOE PRESIDENT GOLDSON, OTHERS TO ADDRESS NHPS STAFF ADJUSTMENTS AT MONDAY MORNING CITY HALL PRESS EVENT

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp will be joined by New Haven Board of Education (BOE) President Darnell Goldson and other BOE colleagues at a City Hall press event Monday to describe their planned, direct, and stepped-up efforts to resolve potential staffing adjustments at New Haven Public Schools.

Monday’s press conference is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Floor 2 of City Hall – 165 Church Street – in New Haven

New Haven – On July 30 at approximately 11:20 p.m. the New Haven Police Department responded to the area of Wayfarer Street and Wilmot Road to investigate a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located two female victims. The women were transported to Yale – New Haven Hospital where they were treated and listed in stable condition. Shortly after the shooting a male victim walked into the hospital with a graze wound to his face.

Detectives and uniformed officers had already been patrolling the area where the shooting occurred; a neighborhood cookout was underway in the Westville Manor complex. As the cookout was letting out, the shooting occurred. It has not been determined at this time if the victims or shooters attended the cookout.

A few hours later another male victim walked into the hospital with a gunshot wound to one of his thighs. It is unknown at this time where this shooting occurred. Detectives from the major crimes unit are investigating the shootings.

MAYOR HARP SAYS CITY’S INDEPENDENCE DAY

FIREWORKS DISPLAY ‘NOT TO BE MISSED’

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp today invited city residents and others from throughout the region to attend this year’s Independence Day fireworks display, set for next Wednesday evening, July 4. A dazzling pyrotechnics display will be launched over East Rock starting just after 9:00 p.m., weather permitting.

The City maintains a viewing area at Wilbur Cross High School, where Mayor Harp is scheduled to officiate at the countdown to the launch. Other, informal viewing is available wherever a sightline to East Rock exists.

City officials are grateful this year to MGM Resorts International for its sponsorship and generous financial contribution to help underwrite the expense of the fireworks display, which serves as the capstone to one of the most vibrant Fourth of July celebrations in the region.
