New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp has announced plans for a citywide
parking ban tonight and tomorrow to allow snow removal equipment better
access to city streets and arteries. The parking restrictions are
intended to streamline the city’s response to this weekend’s
snowstorm.
The parking ban will be in place beginning at 2:00 a.m. Sunday. The ban
will include the city’s downtown (the area encircled by Martin Luther
King, Jr. Boulevard, State Street, Grove Street, and Howe Street),
posted snow emergency routes, and the odd-numbered side of all other
city streets.
It will also be enforced 25 Feet from any intersection, fire hydrant or
bus stop. The downtown ban will end Sunday at 2:00 p.m.; the remainder
of the parking ban will remain in effect until 6:00 a.m. Monday.
The parking ban will be strictly enforced. All public school lots are
available for parking immediately and until 8:00 a.m. Monday. The
Granite Square Garage will open Saturday night at 6:00 and offer free
parking until Monday at 9:00 a.m., the Temple Street Garage will open
tonight at 10:00 and charge $3/day until Monday at 9:00 a.m.
“Even though this is a holiday weekend, there will be no shortage of
city resources brought to bear to respond to this next round of winter
storm conditions,” Mayor Harp said. “At the same time, city
residents are asked to comply with these parking restrictions and
encouraged to limit travel to essential trips due to the likelihood of
dangerous road conditions tonight and early tomorrow.”
Free alternative parking is available in New Haven Public Schools
parking lots, city park parking lots, and residents are reminded that
neighborhood parking remains permissible on the even-numbered side of
city streets.

Main Events Wins Purse Bid for WBC Cruiserweight Eliminator Between Southpaws Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu and Ilunga "Junior" Makabu
Dallas, TX: This morning Main Events won a purse bid for the WBC Cruiserweight Eliminator fight for the mandatory challenger for WBC Cruiserweight World Champion Grigory "Pretty Boy" Drozd (39-1, 27 KOs). The 12-round fight will take place in South Africa in the spring (date to be announced shortly) between Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu (17-1, 11 KOs) of South Africa and Ilunga "Junior" Makabu (18-1, 17 KOs) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Mchunu, 26, is a southpaw who has won his last seven fights dating back to March 2012. In his last fight he successfully defended his NABF Cruiserweight Title against Garrett "The Ultimate Warrior" Wilson with a ten-round unanimous decision victory in September 2014.
Makabu, also a southpaw, has won 18 fights in row since suffering his only professional loss in his pro debut in 2008 (first round TKO). In his last fight he stopped Tamas Bajzath in the third round back in December 2014. He also has a stellar 94% (17 of 18) knockout-to-win ratio and has knocked out his last four opponents in a row.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (Feb. 13th, 2015) – Unbeaten New Haven, Conn., junior middleweight Jimmy Williams kept his perfect record intact Friday and stole the show on the undercard of ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights at Mohegan Sun Arena.
The event, presented by Banner Promotions in association with CES Boxing, featured four regional undercard bouts in addition to the televised quarterfinals of the junior middleweight Boxcino Tournament, originally established in 2014.
Facing a tough test against veteran slugger Eddie Caminero (7-9) of Lawrence, Mass., Williams (9-0-1, 5 KOs) fought through a sluggish stretch in the middle rounds before stopping Caminero at the 2-minute, 32-second mark in the fourth round of their scheduled six-round bout, his second win of 2015 and second in the last four weeks.
Known primarily for his punching power, the 34-year-old Caminero took the fight on just three days’ notice and found himself in trouble midway through the opening round courtesy of a hard right. Williams countered with two more rights, sending Cameniro wobbling toward the ropes trying to maintain his balance.
Caminero survived the round and then began building momentum in the second, at one point taunting Williams in an attempt to get him to exchange blows in the center of the ring. Williams obliged and wound up in a slugfest, which worked in Camerino’s favor.
The wily veteran out-boxed Williams in the second and third and began applying more pressure in the fourth until Williams found his distance and caught the hard-charging Caminero with a perfect left cross, sending Cameniro crashing to the canvas. Caminero scrambled to his feet quickly, but referee Miguel Cortez waived it off, giving Williams his second knockout win of the year.
“He’s a real tough fighter and that’s what I was expecting,” Williams said. “I tried to box him and got into a slugfest, but I got the knockout. It was great.
“He kept coming at me. It was a good experience. My hat’s off to him. He’s a tough fighter. I wasn’t hurt at all. I took some tough shots, but I can take shots. I made it harder than it needed to be, but I kept learning and got the win. Now I’m 9-0.”
Worcester, Mass., middleweight Khiary Gray-Pitts (5-0, 3 KOs) also kept his perfect record intact, stopping Rodrigo Almeida (1-2) of Woburn, Mass., at the end of the opening round. Gray-Pitts attacked Almeida to the body early and often, effectively cutting off the ring as Almeida tried to circle out of harm’s way. Almeida survived the final bell of the opening round, but retreated to his corner clutching his ribcage, prompting his corner to throw in the towel. The unbeaten Gray-Pitts now has two wins in 2015, both by first-round knockout.
Also on the undercard, lightweight Oscar Bonilla (3-0-2) of Bridgeport, Conn., fought to a majority draw against 19-year-old San Antonio prospect Angel Martinez (5-1-1). Judge Don Trella scored the fight 39-37 in favor of Bonilla while judges Peter Hary Jr. and Glenn Feldman each scored it 38-38.
Bonilla out-boxed Martinez in the opening round, but the remaining three were back-and-forth with each judge scoring differently throughout the rest of the fight. Hary Jr. gave the second round to Bonilla and the third to Martinez, whereas Trella scored the second in favor of Martinez and the third for Bonilla. Martinez also won the fourth round on two of the three judges’ scorecards.
New Bedford, Mass., Ray Oliveira Jr. (2-0, 1 KO) was also scheduled to fight on the undercard in a four-round bout against Ralph Johnson (1-3, 1 KO) of Worcester, Mass.

New Haven – Mayor Toni N. Harp and Fire Chief Allyn Wright have
advanced the candidacy of Battalion Chief Matt Marcarelli to the
city’s Board of Fire Commissioners as their selection for the
department’s next Assistant Chief of Operations. The fire commission
is expected to consider the matter at its next meeting.
Marcarelli has been with the city’s fire department since 1995 and is
currently a battalion chief. He is also the department’s Safety
Officer and Director of Training. The position of Assistant Chief of
Operations has been vacant since last year’s retirement of Chief Ralph
Black; Battalion Chief Tom Neville has been serving in the position on a
temporary basis.
“I have great confidence in Battalion Chief Marcarelli’s ability to
meet the new responsibilities he’d face as assistant chief and I will
encourage the fire commissioners to consider this recommendation
favorably,” Mayor Harp said. “For the effective administration of
the city’s fire department, it is important we place the right
candidate in this position.”
“My recommendation of Matt is based upon his background and
experience as Safety Officer and Director of Training and beyond that,
I’ve seen him in action during these recent snow emergencies and had a
chance to witness what he’ll bring to the position,” Chief Wright
said. “Matt’s businesslike approach to the job and all it entails
will be a great benefit to me and to the entire department.”

TEMPORARY PARKING BANS TO BE IMPOSED
New Haven – City public works officials today described good progress
as a result of ongoing snow removal operations and said city workers
have completed downtown snow removal for the time being.
The focus of snow removal operations will now move to residential
streets, particularly narrow ones pinched further by piled-up snow, that
have been identified by fire department officials.
The following is a list of streets where city crews will be working
Friday, February 13, 2015, where temporary parking bans will be in place
from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.:

Hartford – New Haven Mayor Toni N. Harp joined state Comptroller
Kevin Lembo today to offer joint testimony on a legislative proposal –
An Act Concerning Gigabit Internet Access – that would support the
development of ultra-high-speed gigabit Internet service statewide.
New Haven is in front of a statewide coalition of both state and
municipal leaders to deploy gigabit broadband service for everyone in
Connecticut, including underserved areas. More than 100 Connecticut
cities and towns have expressed interest in bringing technology to their
communities and joining the growing economic development movement.
Collaborators include State Sen. Beth Bye, D-West Hartford, Consumer
Counsel Elin Swanson Katz, West Hartford Deputy Mayor Shari Cantor and
Stamford Mayor David Martin.
Mayor Harp and Comptroller Lembo testified together today on the
gigabit legislation, which could have very significant economic
development and consumer benefits.
“Today the transmission of data is what’s needed to form the
bedrock of an information age economy,” New Haven Mayor Toni N. Harp
said. “New Haven needs one gigabit capacity to transport the medical
data, financial transactions, and research information that are the
currency of New Haven in 2015. Today, our entire state needs this
dramatic infrastructure upgrade to accommodate a deluge of digital
information.”
“This legislation has the potential to energize and expand
Connecticut’s economy in a way that will have lasting effects for
decades,” Lembo said. “Gigabit broadband service would rapidly
deliver information – serving as a superhighway for researchers,
schools, businesses large and small and every household. It would be the
ultimate economic assistance incentive program because it would reward
all business and industries, new ones and those already established
here, with a superior infrastructure and an open door.”
A gigabit broadband network is capable of 1,000 megabit-per-second
(Mbps) upload and download speeds. The current average home speed in
Connecticut is only 9 Mbps download and even slower upload.
“This initiative is about much more than movie and music
downloads,” Lembo said. “In fact, it’s hardly about entertainment
at all. It’s about economic development and innovation.”
Connecticut companies both large and small face significant challenges
transacting daily business with global clients due to the costs and
limitations of the state’s existing Internet technology capability.
“Some of Connecticut's businesses are experiencing impediments to
their day-to-day work because of the lack of this technology in the
state,” Lembo said. “Gigabit broadband service will provide a strong
economic development incentive to business and bring more competition to
the broadband market, reducing costs and improving service for all
businesses and households that are suffering from high broadband, cable
and phone bills.”
Lembo and Harp said gigabit development in towns and cities across the
country are spurring new start-up communities and attracting new
corporate residents. They pointed to the success of gigabit networks in
areas like Kansas City, MO; Austin, TX; and Chattanooga, TN.
“Not only are new and existing entrepreneurs able to plug into a
reliable and worthwhile network, but consumers and businesses alike are
able to reap more competitive pricing for broadband service,” Lembo
said. “In gigabit municipalities, customers are seeing improved
customer service and reduced costs for higher-speed broadband service
– in some cases going from several thousand dollars a month to
roughly $70/a month. For residential consumers of cable, phone and
Internet services the costs for bundled services have been reduced
significantly.
“The state needs to start thinking about high-speed internet the way
it thinks about rails and roads. But fortunately, unlike roads that
have to be maintained every three or four years, this infrastructure
will long outlive any financing. As a small state with high population
density we have a real opportunity to leapfrog other states by having
access to gigabit broadband service statewide. Gigabit broadband
networks are coming. Connecticut can get on board or be left
behind.”
