The Greater New Haven Branch of the NAACP and the Million Jobs Campaign Announce “Wake Up Wednesday” in New Haven
NEW HAVEN, CT — The Greater New Haven Branch of the NAACP and the Million Jobs Campaign are proud to announce “Wake Up Wednesday,” a community-driven initiative launching on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at McDonald’s Restaurant, located at 250 Whalley Avenue in New Haven.
Born from the vision of the Greater Hartford Branch of the NAACP and the Connecticut State Conference, “Wake Up Wednesday” was created to combat concentrated poverty and violence through collective action. Since its inception in 2023, the initiative has driven measurable progress in Hartford’s Barbour Street corridor, uniting city and state leaders, businesses, and community agencies to reduce violence and revitalize neighborhoods.
Corrie Betts, President of the Greater Hartford NAACP, reflected on the initiative’s origins: “Wake Up Wednesday began as a grassroots call to action in Hartford. By uniting our community, we’ve shown that progress is possible when we prioritize people over politics. Now, we’re proud to see this model inspire change across Connecticut.”
Scot X. Esdaile, President of the Connecticut NAACP State Conference, emphasized the statewide significance: “This initiative is more than an event—it’s a movement. By bringing together leaders, businesses, and residents, we’re addressing systemic inequities head-on and building a future where every community thrives. What began in Hartford is now a blueprint for hope across Connecticut.”
Dori Dumas, President of the Greater New Haven NAACP, added: “New Haven stands at a pivotal moment. Through ‘Wake Up Wednesday,’ we’re mobilizing our community to confront poverty, violence, and disinvestment with unity and purpose. This is our call to action: Wake up, show up, and work together for a stronger, safer, and more vibrant New Haven.”
Residents, local organizations, and leaders are invited to join this collaborative effort to foster unity, equity, and opportunity. Together, we can “wake up” New Haven and ignite lasting change.
